1. Florida: Percy Harvin leaves, Superman stays and all 11 on defense return. Unless something wild happens this offseason, the Gators are locked in at the top spot.

2. Texas: WR Jordan Shipley gaining a sixth year of eligibility has been way overlooked. Defense will be salty in Year No. 2 under Will Muschamp.

3. Oklahoma: Sooners staved off the NFL for a season, but must replace four starters on the offensive line. OU has always protected well, but it will be a challenge next fall.

4. Alabama: The loss of Glen Coffee hurt, but Mark Ingram is a talented rising sophomore and the defense will be terrific.

5. Ole Miss: Let's see how the talented Rebels, who didn't win an SEC game in 2007 but were the only team to beat Florida in '08, deal with success.

6. Virginia Tech: The Hokies will be a more confident team from Week 1 because of stability in the offensive backfield with QB Tyrod Taylor and TB Darren Evans, and yet another stout defense.

7. USC: Trojans will be very good by the end of the season. Road games within the first six weeks of the season -- Ohio State, Cal and Notre Dame -- will determine if this team can compete for championships.

8. Ohio State: I can't wait to see dynamic QB Terrelle Pryor after a full offseason of work: weight room, mechanics, film study.

9. LSU: Anyone who doesn't think it's all about the quarterback, look at LSU's season: The Tigers were average and the defense played horribly with poor quarterback play. In a bowl blowout of Georgia Tech -- after freshman QB Jordan Jefferson got a month of preparation -- LSU looked like one of the nation's best teams.

10. Georgia Tech: Wait and see what happens in Year 2 of coach Paul Johnson's Flexbone offense: All 11 starters return, including star TB Jonathan Dwyer.

11. Notre Dame: The confidence QB Jimmy Clausen gained from his play at Hawaii will be huge. In ND's six losses, Clausen threw eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In seven wins, he had 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

12. Oklahoma State: Cowboys will be terrific on offense again (Zac Robinson is a sleeper Heisman Trophy candidate), but this team must get defensive stops in big games.

13. Boise State: Broncos are loaded again, and should be the best non-BCS team. QB Kellen Moore is the most underrated player in the game.

14. Oregon: Don't be surprised if coach Mike Bellotti walks away this offseason and officially hands a talented team to coach-in-waiting Chip Kelly.

15. Penn State: The defense was hit hard by NFL early entries, and the offense will miss a trio of receivers. But QB Daryll Clark will get much better as a second-year starter (and he played well in '08), and Evan Royster is a big-time tailback.

16. California: The Bears will score on just about anyone, but the defense needs to be rebuilt. Another looming issue: A quarterback battle (yep, another one) between Kevin Riley and Brock Mansion.

17. Georgia: If career reserve QB Joe Cox plays well, the 'Dawgs are a top 10 team -- and maybe much more. This team is better than the three ugly losses of 2008; injuries hurt Georgia more than any other team.

18. BYU: Offense has some issues on the line, but QB Max Hall and TB Harvey Unga return -- as do nine starters on defense.

19. Florida State: This is one perplexing team. QB Christian Ponder is erratic, and the 'Noles still lose focus too often. If tough guy offensive line coach Rick Trickett gets his young unit to develop and perform consistently, this team will be dangerous.

20. TCU: Frogs thrive on defense, and nine starters return from one of the nation's best units. QB Andy Dalton has to play better.

21. Kansas: Offense hasn't been a problem the last two years, and won't be again in 2009. The issue is defense, where this team slipped in '08 and must replace key players LBs Joe Mortensen and James Holt.

22. Clemson: Tigers will be tough on defense, and the offense will be different with dual-threat QB Willy Korn and dynamic TB C.J. Spiller becoming the focus of the unit.

23. Nebraska: Huskers must find a quarterback, but a surge of confidence from a nine-win season -- and playing smarter on defense -- will carry over to 2009.

24. Auburn: Gene Chizik has made big moves as a new coach with terrific hires for his staff, including Gus Malzahn (offensive coordinator) and Ted Roof (defensive coordinator). This team has talent on both sides of the ball.

25. Utah: The Utes must find a new quarterback, three receivers and rebuild the offensive line. The loss of DE Paul Kruger is a blow to the defense, and the schedule is brutal.

First observations:

Ole Miss's ranking is rather lofty.

No way USC starts the season ranked that low, not with the love affair the media has with its darlings.

Notre Dame at #11?!?

Boise St. is played out. Let Utah have its chance as the non-BCS pick. They earned it.

Georgia is better than #17 imo.

Auburn will be lucky to field a .500 program this season.

even with Stafford and Moreno going pro?

UGA returns most of its OL intact and Caleb King is more than capable at TB. Behind the line they will have with Sturdivent healthy again, they won't have to depend on the arm of Cox so much but he has been in the system for three years.

I'm not saying they are top 5 but probably better than #17. JMO though so take it with a grain of salt.

Cox wasn't a household name around SEC circles when he was recruited in '05, but he was well known around the East coast ACC schools.

I suspect he'll do just fine next season.

Given the choice, chances are I'd take Caleb King as a RB before I'd take Moreno. I've always been very impressed with what he brings to the playing field.

I'd add Ohio States ranking as a questionable as well...along with Kansas.

On LSU, JJ looked solid after some time. Their next kid coming in Russell Sheppard looks promising too.

It will be interesting seeing how Ole Miss can handle the success and if they start off the season on high hopes. I feel Nutt is a good coach and they can be competitive for the SECW next year IMO.

My concern for us is our offense next year. Perticularly the line and how fast they can gel as one under a new QB. We need to have some players step up and take on a leadership role since we lost this years leaders.

I hope the Barn flops but I feel they will be somewhat strong in their first year of transition. The AU fans I work with are already pumping their chests out and saying we're going to be embarrassed at the Plains.

Superman Tebow media darling will get old again next year.

LBS' thoughts.

1. Florida: Percy Harvin leaves, Superman stays and all 11 on defense return. Unless something wild happens this offseason, the Gators are locked in at the top spot.
Have we ever had a team so obviously the pick have things work out as they should?

2. Texas: WR Jordan Shipley gaining a sixth year of eligibility has been way overlooked. Defense will be salty in Year No. 2 under Will Muschamp.
I see them the favorite in the Big 12 as well.

4. Alabama: The loss of Glen Coffee hurt, but Mark Ingram is a talented rising sophomore and the defense will be terrific.
Interesting that they did not mention having to replace JPW. Hot sure what that implies. Is it confidence in the replacements or a statement about how little out QB matters?

6. Virginia Tech: The Hokies will be a more confident team from Week 1 because of stability in the offensive backfield with QB Tyrod Taylor and TB Darren Evans, and yet another stout defense.
"Confidence in the backfield...week 1" You mean like Clemson was this season? :D

7. USC: Trojans will be very good by the end of the season. Road games within the first six weeks of the season -- Ohio State, Cal and Notre Dame -- will determine if this team can compete for championships.
When was the last time they were thought of this lowly?

8. Ohio State: I can't wait to see dynamic QB Terrelle Pryor after a full offseason of work: weight room, mechanics, film study.
Its all good, until Bowl season. Question: Is OSU the new Notre Dame of Bowling?

I recall Auburn looking like world beaters in their bowl game in '07, then, well, you know.

10. Georgia Tech: Wait and see what happens in Year 2 of coach Paul Johnson's Flexbone offense: All 11 starters return, including star TB Jonathan Dwyer.
Dude, Tech is going to be a beast in the ACC.

11. Notre Dame: The confidence QB Jimmy Clausen gained from his play at Hawaii will be huge. In ND's six losses, Clausen threw eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In seven wins, he had 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
This assessment it stupid. They are thinking lights out for a six win team because they beat Hawaii. Yet Bama loses its Bowl and ther is not effect?

22. Clemson: Tigers will be tough on defense, and the offense will be different with dual-threat QB Willy Korn and dynamic TB C.J. Spiller becoming the focus of the unit.
If Dabo can sell the kids during the off-season, this team could discover its magic.

24. Auburn: Gene Chizik has made big moves as a new coach with terrific hires for his staff, including Gus Malzahn (offensive coordinator) and Ted Roof (defensive coordinator). This team has talent on both sides of the ball.
WHAT?!? Chizik in YEAR ONE does better than Tubberville did with an entire team that he recruited?

25. Utah: The Utes must find a new quarterback, three receivers and rebuild the offensive line. The loss of DE Paul Kruger is a blow to the defense, and the schedule is brutal.
They have to rebuild their offense. Their schedule is "Brutal". So we are to believe that the UTES are now a defensive beast?

Most of this I agree with LBS, but a few exceptions.

World beaters? It took overtime for them to get by Clemson in the Chick-fil-A bowl...I'd use the term "ballyhooed," but world beaters? Meh.

With the exception of a few games, they have a very easy schedule in '09. Realistically, a chance to fulfill their BCS bowl requirements.

#11 does seem high to me. But, I wouldn't have any qualms with a 23-25 type ranking.

I think it's glaringly obvious we have bigger problems then the RB position to "reload". The QB position and OL come to mind, not that they're that important or anything.

There for I can't take this poll seriously.

Wow, the Sporting News does not know much about Utah. We lose 2 offensive lineman and we have to rebuild? Interestingly, BYU loses 4 lineman and they only have "issues"? Kruger is 1 of only 4 players we lose on defense, having Kruger back would be great, but his leaving isn't exactly a blow. He will be replaced by Shelby, you remember him, our 257lb DT. We are also very deep at WR. Maybe Sporting News doesn't know we run the spread and 20% of our roster is wide receivers. As far as QB, we have a respectable stable of QB's, I won't bore you with the minutia, but we will be ok here next year, hopefully, good to very good. Schedule is tough, we have the top of the conference on the road (TCU, BYU) and Oregon. I think 25 is too low, top 10 too high, maybe somewhere in the middle, 16-17-18.

It is a shame that you guys lose your kicker. That guy was dead on at the Senior Bowl.

Bah. I hate, hate, hate, hate pre-season rankings. They're absolutely and completely meaningless, and are nothing but guesswork. Hell, last year had Ohio State at #1, Georgia at #2, Missouri at #8, Tennessee at #12, and Utah wasn't even ranked. Yet this crap can have a huge impact on where teams can finish up at the end of the year.

Get rid of them entirely and wait to release rankings until after week 3 or 4, when we actually have a chance to see if these teams can play.
