We need some ammunition to fire back at this perceived weakness of the Bama defense.

I know that Bama returns 4 on defense. Who are they?

I know that Bama returns some others on defense who started some games, but were not considered starters. Who are they?

I know that Bama returns some others on defense who played extensively, but never started. Who are they?

Hmmm, off the top of my head Damien Square is one of those guys that's been around for a while and (I'm pretty sure) never really "started."

Milliner, Dial, Moseley and Sunseri come to mind when I think of that too, mostly Milliner and Moseley though. Nico is another guy that's seen significant time and has been around for a while now.

Jesse Williams and Robert Lester speak for themselves. Anyone trying to downplay the contribution they've had on this teams recent success is kidding themselves.

Then there's a heap of others that have a little experience but not much. Hubbard, Patrick, DePriest are some others.

There are six that started six or more games last years; Nico, Lester, Milliner, Mosley, Square, and Jesse.

Extensive playing time: HaHa, Trey, Quinton, Xavier, Fulton, Hubbard, Pagan, Patrick, Perry, Stinson, and Sunseri.

That's just off the top of my head. On the extensive list, several of those players played in every game last year, a few of them recorded starts. The player with the least amount of experience in that group is Jeoffrey Pagan who only saw action in five or six game last year.

Square started every game last year BCore.

Nico started in over half of our games last year. Mosley and Milliner started in six games—games we started in our dime package. Quinton started in one game.

Sunseri, Hubbard, Patrick, and DePriest didn't have a start.

Ahhh okay. Man, my memory is terrible these days.

Chit, it's things like this I can't seem to forget and don't ask me why. Stats just have a funny way of sticking with me when I read over them. Fact is, just about anything I read is that way.

Don't even ask the women I date how good my memory is...according to them I can't remember a damn thing. NOW, they've read me my rights—according to them—and I can't seem to remember that as well. :icon_scratch:

Fantastic! This is what I have so far:

Bama returns a lot of experience on defense. Phil Steele lists Bama as having 4 returning starters on defense. Don't know what his criteria is, but Bama has 6 defensive players returning that had 6 or more starts. Three with 13, one with 7, and two with 6. Perhaps he did not count the two with 6. Not cool because one of those had 11 starts in 2010!

In addition, they have 12 other returning defensive players with very extensive playing time. A few of those recorded starts in 2011. I can name names if you don't buy the numbers.

Did I miss anything!? Guess this is a work in progress. Will continue to edit as I receive info.

Now that we're on this subject, here's a few that they could perceive as a weakness.

Brandon Ivory, who is likely to be Williams back-up, only played in four games last year. He's a guy that HAS to step up this season. After him we are looking at guys who redshirted or are true freshman.

Nick Perry did play in seven games last year but with as much time as we spend in our nickel and dime sets he's going to have to elevate his game. He filled in for the money position last year. The loss of Dixon puts more pressure on him. This also brings Collins into the picture as a kid that needs to be ready to contribute. We're fortunate that Sunseri can cover in those multiple defensive back packages but we still need some help.

I expect to see Dillon Lee and Ryan Anderson on the field quite a bit this fall. It wouldn't surprise me in the least for those guys to see action in about half of our games. I hope they get a lot of reps in week two. I'm interested in seeing how quickly Ragland or Denzel hit the field.

One guy I didn't include in my first post which could be considered as a returning contributor is Deion Belue. He didn't start for us last year, but will this season.

Returning starters is a stat that really can't be quantified. I suspect Steele is using our 3-4 base set which would give you Jesse, Square, Lester, and I guess Nico? But, Nico only started seven games last year. Mosley had the others.

The weird thing is when you look at people talking about starters lost they'll include Jerrell Harris in that group yet Jerrell only started seven games.

Maybe seven is his breaking/starting point? I know he calculates lettermen in his returning experience numbers.

Hell, how many of you guys realized Hardie Buck played in every game last season?

I used this once on a B1G board. Here's how it went down:

Had one reply. A confirmation by a Florida fan. He wrote:

"It's 4 and 5-star guys and the system. They replace 6'4", 260 lb LBs with 6'4", 260 lb LBs who can run. It's stupid. Ryans on the Texans then McClain on the Ravens then Hightower...ugh."

There is no doubt that we lost some great football players off last year's D, and people keep bringing up our 2010 D. The 2010 D di have a few issues, true. However, it was, by season's end, one of the best D's in the country statistically. The secondary was the area where we lost the most.

In 2010 our secondary featured two year starter Mark Barron, red shirt freshman Robert Lester, true freshman Dee Milliner, sophomore Dre Kirkpatrick (who had played mostly special teams as a freshman) and juco Dequan Menzie. Junior Will Lowry played the dime.

This year we have Senior Robert Lester (3 year startter) at safety alongside sophomore (who played extensively) Vinnie Sunseri. Junior Dee Milliner, with 17 starts under his belt is at one corner, juco Deion Belue at the other. Junior John Fulton (who has played a good bit, mostly on special teams) back up, and Ha-Ha sees a lot of time at safety. I see significantly more experience this year, as well as a high talent level.

News to me. I hate the NFL. The few plays that a flag is not thrown are ones in which a flag should be thrown. Drives me crazy.

And vice-versa. Considering some of the rules and flags thrown on quarterback contact in today's game? And we see people talking about some conferences in D1 playing flag football?

On the eighth day DVR's were created so you could watch college football after a quick round of golf. Churches started early morning services so you could do all three.
