Sochi Winter Olympics Odds and Ends...

First time I have watched any Olympics in a long while. But, tonight I watch the Men Ski Slopestyle Final and men skating. The men won all three medals. I keep missing the hockey.

Twenty years ago, in a stadium in Lillehammer, Norway, an Olympic team representing the newly independent country of Slovakia marched in the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics for the first time. Leading the way, holding a new flag, was a hockey player who made his living in North America, starring in the NHL.Peter Stastny is now a member of European Parliament, his hockey days seemingly long behind him. But he is also here, taking in the sport that gave him standing in his own country and abroad. And as the Olympic tournament opened and Slovakia’s game against the United States approached, he was asked for whom he would be rooting.
“My dad’s answer was, ‘Well, we’re playing Slovakia,’ ” Paul Stastny said Thursday evening. “So he’s USA all the way.”
For most on the U.S. men’s hockey team, Thursday’s convincing 7-1 opening victory over Slovakia at Shayba Arena served as an opportunity to shake off the cobwebs from an 11-hour flight and to get more accustomed to new teammates as well as to the larger, more wide-open sheet of Olympic ice.
And the Americans did a good job of that. Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson scored the first goal of the tournament for Team USA, and after Slovakia briefly tied the score early in the second period, the United States responded with six goals in a 15-minute stretch.
“There’s always a lot of nerves and anxiousness to start these tournaments,” U.S. captain Zach Parise said. “For us to come out most importantly with a win but a pretty convincing win makes you feel good.”

USA women's hockey got screwed out of that game the other day .. but we will probably meet Canada in the medal round, and hopefully kick their butts.

Anyone catch Plushenko's exit the other day? So sad to go out that way. The way the crowd reacted gave me goosebumps .. Cheering, then dead silence, then louder cheering.

Team USA doing well. Currently tied for 2nd with the Netherlands in medals with 12 total (5 gold).

Also, I can't stop looking at Bob's eyes. Glad he is off camera now, lol. Poor guy.

The mens USA vs Russia game is nasty. Lots of hits and after the whistle jawing, pushing, and short punches and the best thing is the refs aren't calling any of it. Good game so far.

That was a terrible call against Dustin Brown, terrible!

Bylsma, who coaches my Pens, needs to get the US ti start hitting like the Pens do. Russia is getting far too many more shots in than we are.

Pavelski just broke the tie v. Russia with 10:31 left in the game. That's about ten seconds off when Eurozine (sp?)scored the winner v. Russia in the Miracle game. USA! USA!

Gracious. Seems like the US is playing kind of like my Blackhawks don't hit and try to out skate opposition.

Russia has to be out hitting us 3-1 or more. Surprising with our HC being the same guy who coaches the Pens and how they hit

Russia is really pressing hard. USA can't find any passing lanes and even when they do, they have around 2-3 surrounding the goal.
