🏈 Senior Bowl: Is Alabama's Greg McElroy an NFL quarterback?

I was thinking about Greg this morning before I even read this article. Even though I've personally know some of our QB's over the years that led us to some great wins I think I've probably followed Greg more closely than any other QB in my life. FWIW, that goes back a few years.

He's going to be a fun guy to watch...as weird as that sounds.

There is a lot more to it than having a cannon of an arm like Mallet does. I think Greg has a great mind for the game. I'd say he needs to work on unloading the ball more quickly to avoid sacks when the protection starts breaking down.

Greg is a guy that I think could go into the league and be a back up for 8-10 years and even get some significant playing time during his career. He is too much of a competitor to not make it.

I think the sky's the limit for GMac,he's got his head screwed on straight and he's got a burning desire to compete and win so he'll be in the thick of things just wait and see.

You know, I sort of see him like Richard Todd. But, I hope his career doesn't end up with the controversy Todd ran into on occasion.

I remember Todd at the tail end of his career with the Jets. I was a little too young to know or recall any controversy. I can see Greg like Rutledge when he was with the Giants for so long. I'm not a NFL fan but I am a Greg McElroy fan.

Even a better comparison...as many times as I've talked to him...kid's got a future.

I figure McElroy will be a career back-up. He has above average, not great, arm strength. He has pretty good footwork, he isn't overly fast but has somewhat deceptive speed. I think his biggest problem is holding the ball too long. Whether his receivers just weren't open or he struggled with making the reads, he held the ball too long far too often, especially as a senior. Coverage will only get tighter and schemes more complex--he has a long way to go before he is a viable NFL starter. He would be a solid second day pick-up for a team in need of a back-up.

I think as hard working as GMac is he could be a starting NFL QB. There are several QBs in the NFL starting now that I think Gmac is better than. His biggest problem is holding the ball too long, but I think he'll get good quality work on that. Maybe this is a bit homerism, but I honestly think Gmac is a better QB than Colt (although I know Texas folks would highly disagree with me and maybe even some non-Texas people). I for sure think Gmac is a far better more NFL ready than Mallett and maybe even Newton.

Not only is Gmac very hard working he has a chip on his shoulder about people doubting whether he can be a NFL QB or not. He hates that people say he's a game manager.
