ATLANTA – New Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt has apparently dipped into his past to fill his job of defensive coordinator, hiring Georgia outside linebacker coach Kevin Sherrer, sources confirmed to UGASports.
No stranger to one another, Sherrer coached at Georgia with Pruitt during his two years as defensive coordinator of the Bulldogs, before remaining when Kirby Smart was named head coach two years ago.
Prior to coming to Georgia, Sherrer spent one season as the defensive coordinator at South Alabama after serving on the staff at Alabama where his responsibilities included assisting Crimson Tide student athletes with academics, community outreach and their personal lives.
A graduate of Alabama, Sherrer’s career with the Bulldogs was met with significant success, as he helped the Bulldog defense develop into one of the top unit this year in the SEC, and head into the Jan. 1 playoff game at the Rose Bowl with the nation’s second-ranked pass defense, allowing just 158.3 yards per game.
There is no indication whether Sherrer will stay with the Bulldogs through the Rose Bowl.
Sherrer earned $375,000 with the Bulldogs this year. He’ll get a significant raise to become the Vols’ defensive coordinator.
Among the candidates to replace Sherrer are believed to included former Georgia Southern head coach and longtime Smart friend Tyson Summers, formerly the defensive coordinator at Colorado State and Central Florida.
