Report: N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried to be fired

N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried will be fired after the season, according to a report from ABC11’s Mark Armstrong.

Armstrong cited ā€œmultiple sources, independent of each other,ā€ in reporting that N.C. State made a decision over the weekend to fire Gottfried at season’s end. The report comes after N.C. State (14-12, 3-10) was blasted 88-58 by a Wake Forest team that entered the game 5-7 in ACC play.

After the game, Gottfried told CBS Sports he wasn’t worried about his job status.

"Truthfully, I'm not paying attention to any of that," Gottfried told CBS Sports. "I haven't had any discussions with anyone at NC State about that. I plan on being here for a long time."

Gottfried is 122-81 at N.C. State, but the program has been trending downward. He made the NCAA Tournament in each of his first four seasons, only to go 16-17 last year. Many felt that this year’s Wolfpack would be a sleeper team with the No. 4 recruiting class in the 247Sports Composite, including a pair of five-star talents in Dennis Smith Jr. and Omer Yurtseven.

NC State refutes report about Mark Gottfried’s status

Mark Gottfried is still N.C. State’s basketball coach and will be on Wednesday night when the Wolfpack faces North Carolina.

An N.C. State official refuted a report by WTVD on Monday, based on anonymous sources, that Gottfried will be fired at the conclusion of the season and that the school has sent out ā€œpreliminary feelersā€ to Dayton coach Archie Miller about the possibility of replacing Gottfried.

ā€œMark Gottfried remains our head coach and we are all focused on our next opponent,ā€ N.C. State associate athletic director Fred Demarest said in a statement released by the school. ā€œTo suggest we have reached out to any other coach is both incorrect and blatantly irresponsible.ā€

Gottfried’s future has come in question during a five-game losing streak and after some lopsided ACC losses this season.

Saturday’s 88-58 loss at Wake Forest was the Pack’s third ACC loss by at least 25 points this season.

ā€œIt’s unacceptable the way we got beat,ā€ Gottfried said on the ACC’s weekly conference call on Monday. ā€œWe’ve got to be a lot better.ā€

N.C. State, 14-12 overall and 3-10 in the ACC, is likely to miss the NCAA tournament for the second straight year. Gottfried, 53, led the Wolfpack to the NCAA tournament in each of his first four seasons. His contract, with a buyout of $2.28 million, runs through the 2019-2020 season.

N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow has said she will evaluate Gottfried’s status after the season.

Miller, 38, is in his sixth season at Dayton and is a former point guard and assistant coach for the Wolfpack.

This topic has been on all the sports talk radio shows up here since the beatdown at the hands of UNC a couple weeks back. He's done a pretty good job recruiting, but an awful job of developing and coaching. He's had some very solid recruiting classes, and little to nothing to show for them (including players leaving who never developed anywhere near their potential). Not sure who they have their eye on to take over when he leaves, but they must want to get out of the gate early in the coaching search.

Doubtful it takes a hit without her throwing him in jail. System don't care if you are employed or not, you best pay.

I remember several years ago, that Barry Bonds, when he was with San Fran, petitioned the court to lower his payment due to his increased cost of living expense when he made the move from Pitt to San Fran. The damn judge AGREED!!!!!

Gawd. That reminds me of Elizabeth going off on Finebaum when he was being critical and the comments about his wife fighting his battles for him. Now, his son?

Ya know, despite all of those numbers he's citing being true, there's still the matter of the Pack finishing 13th in the ACC last season with a 5-13 record. There's the lone three conference wins this season versus what ... 11 losses I believe?

In short, Mark's on the court success never seems to live us to the talent he brings in. His coaching for many reasons has always reminded me of fool's gold.
