It appears Rutgers is on the verge of boosting a booster.
According to NJ.com, the Scarlet Knights are set to hire Jeff Towers as the teams new recruiting coordinator. If you're unfamiliar with Towers' coaching history, don't worry, because there's none to be aware of at this point. Towers is actually one of the program's boosters and has served as a business consultant during his career as a professionalh.
His LinkedIn profile says Towers is an "executive with 30 years of experience leading robust marketing, communications and fundraising programs in some of the largest nonprofit organizations in America." It goes on to say that he has managed "his own consulting agency assisting nonprofit organizations in strategic planning, board development, marketing, communications and fundraising.''
And while it doesn't sound like the kind of resume you'd typically see from somebody on a football staff, in reality it may not be all that crazy of an idea. A recruiting coordinator doesn't really need to know the intricacies of football coaching, nor does he need to be an excellent evaluator of talent. A recruiting coordinator just has to do what their job title implies: coordinate the team's recruiting efforts.
Towers won't be flying blind, either, as Rutgers is also expected to hire former Illinois director of player personnel Marcus Berry to serve in the same role at Rutgers. E.J. Barthel will also be promoted from his role as a volunteer assistant to Rutgers' recruiting staff.
