Exactly, so FDR, after gradually and discretely involving us in the warhelping the UK, needed another event to change public opinion.

It came from a similar context. As one who has investigated the origins and causes of most US wars, Lincoln and FDR used similar tactics to provoke the Confederacy and Japan, respectively, into commiting actions which could serve as pretexts for war and expansion. Gulf of Tonkin also comes to mind. When you’re lucky enough to have the planet’s largest moats to the East and West and benign neighbors to the North and South, you need to be creative when convincing your population that foreigners are out to get you and they need to shoulder the burdens of war.

The USS Missouri overlooking her sister! Ironic that our entry into WW2 started with the attack on Pearl and ended on the deck of the Mighty Mo with the Japanese signing the articles of surrender!

I have Manned the Rails 3 times In Pearl while in the Navy, each time was a sobering moment in my life. The wife and I went in 2016, the 75th anniversary.

I’ve been there to all of the memorial sites on O’ahu, but as I was only 3 at the time I don’t remember anything. My sister was born there and my older brother went to kindergarten and first grade. We went to the east coast after that.
Want to get back there before I go. See where we lived and stuff.

Went to bama game and best day in trip was to the Arizona.

Its a memorial. Every one was so quiet. The sailers looked so good. All the japanese (70% of people that day at memorial) people were having their picture with the sailors in their white uniforms.

The irony is that Admiral Yamamoto, who received the job of planning the attack, was firmly against carrying it out. To paraphrase what he said to his colleagues about it, "If we succeed in crippling the Americans' Pacific Fleet, we'll run wild for six months or a year. Following that, they'll absolutely kick our asses. We will have wakened a sleeping giant." Needless to say, they should have listened to him.

Didn't Tuberville say the same thing about Alabama? (That's the way it played out!)
