This isn't directed at you, but this opinion in general ...
... here's an observation made by thousands, but I've yet to see an argument on how. Seeing it from Bama fans amuses me a bit; it's football programs like UA that make that big of a rule change impossible. The fear is a school like Bama would be able to poach talent with kids looking for the big stage. And, UA would be able to do just that.
Think about the recruiting world right now. Consider, just as one example, what's going on in Oxford. Now, mix that in with kids being able to go anywhere, anytime, with no penalty. How do you control that?
The suggestion coaches move without penalty is another comment that makes me smirk a little. Only a handful of coaches can move without penalty; one being Nick Saban. Think about it. UA was scoffed at when people found out Saban didn't have a buyout clause.
If you think that the penalty coaches have to pay isn't sufficient, I'd say you've got the basis for an argument. But, there's plenty of cases you can find where schools and coaches have had to pay.
On a side note: Look at the flip side of things: A coach can be fired and not have a job in September. A player who hasn't done his job well still gets his spot next season.
Addressing a few of those points, Terry. And again, it's only my opinion, so it's not worth much.
How do you control that (movement)? - You don't. It is what it is.
Coaches penalized for movement - Schools that poach coaches often pay the buyouts. Coaches negotiated the situations. Schools don't care to pay. No penalty there.
Player not playing well and getting scholly renewed - A player's scholarship is not renewed automatically. It's a one year deal which does not have to be renewed - ask several of the Ole Miss women's track team who had that very thing happen to them a couple of years ago during a coaching change. Most of the time football coaches do renew a poorly performing player's scholly to thwart negative recruiting, but it's not mandatory.
Most important - your very first point - UA could benefit most from the poaching of players. Exactly. I think the Tide would benefit greatly. The school's programs are incredible. Coaching is incredible. Environment is stellar. Totally agree, and it's another reason I think players should be able to move and play whenever and wherever they wish. A change like this in the rules is never going to happen, but I still think it would be great.
