🏈 QB Jake Fromm has flipped his commitment from Alabama to #UGA.

Might be reaching there...

If that's the way we are going to evaluate the recruitment process, are we going to say that Kirby doesn't mind going back on his word after recruiting many of the kids in this class to Alabama?

Wasn't Kirby in charge of our Georgia recruitment?

If the coaches who are paid hundreds of thousands of dollars are allowed to be mercenaries, why do we blame a kid for wanting to better his own situation when the opportunity presents itself? Kirby did it... Saban's done it... And so on.

I never think it's a positive thing when people don't keep their word... But the recruiting world is 100% business. Trying to upgrade should always be a consideration... The adults at Alabama make those decisions that impact kids on a yearly basis, so I see no issue with the kid doing the same.

I think it was more of his dad running his mouth about keeping his word, speaking like he's an authority figure that raised a kid with keeping his word, the BAM, the kid decommits. I agree with everything you're saying on the other end. That's why I made my comment earlier about parents getting into the business of decommitting now.

Out of 8 going on 9 years I think CNS has done a pretty good job with the kids he recruits that stay with us. 4 championships out of the last 7 years.... I'll take those odds on a lottery ticket every time, not going to sweat kids flipping and going somewhere else, it kinda gives me the impression that PT is more important to them than championships....imo.

I expect Kirby to have some top classes... right away
I should have clarified... I think they will top us in the coming years.

In recruiting rankings? Maybe. I've long maintained there's not a lot of difference in the top classes each year; it's what you get out of them.

This reminds me of Ray Goff. A quarterback at UGA—a little ironic in this thread—who took over the UGA coaching job and and received raving reviews about how he was doing on the recruiting trail. He did field a competitive team from time to time but followed in the footsteps of one of their icons in Dooley. While Richt doesn't have the ring, he does have that iconic stature around Athens.

H/T to '94 UGA team ...

When Kirby Smart took the Georgia coaching job back in December, the wheels were already in motion for one of the top quarterbacks in the country to rethink his commitment to Alabama.

Emerson Fromm, a UGA grad himself and father of Jake Fromm, told SEC Country that the Bulldogs’ hiring of Smart was ultimately one of the biggest factors in why his son — a four-star prospect and the nation’s No. 4 pro-style passer — de-committed from Alabama and switched to Georgia.

“When Kirby left, it made it tough. Kirby was a big draw to go to Alabama,” Emerson said. “I mean, Alabama stands alone. You don’t need any extra reasons to go to Alabama. Jake is a very relationship-oriented kid. He wants to win. He wants to play. He wants a great education. He is also a people-person. Alabama is just not geared up that way. There’s obviously nothing wrong with it because they win national championships every year. Jake cares more about the relationships.”

In fact, Jake Fromm’s relationship with Smart is so strong that his father said if Smart had taken a job elsewhere, there was a good chance his son would have followed him to that school.

After Smart took the Georgia job, Emerson said Alabama kind of backed off its communication with Jake because Smart had been the Fromms’ direct line to the Crimson Tide coaching staff.

“Kirby said he wasn’t necessarily going to try to steal him from Alabama, but at the same time, we’re going to talk and not just give up on Jake,” Emerson said. “It’s interesting how there was very little contact after that from Alabama. Kirby was our point of contact there.”

Why one of the nation's top QBs wanted to play for Kirby Smart more than Nick Saban

Odd but interesting statement from Jake's dad:

I think Jake wanted to be a part of something that is on the way up, and he wants to be a part of something special,” his father said. “It’s harder to be a part of something special at Alabama because they do it all of the time."

I'll bet each and every Bama player who walked off the field after the Clemson game thought they were "something special" and rightfully so.

Odd but interesting statement from Jake's dad:
If it sounds like it reads, he's mirroring the recruiting approach by Kirby ... at least that's how I'm interpreting the quote.

Finishing the paragraph you copied part of below ... he finishes with ...

...You go win a championship at Georgia, you’ve done something.”

It feels like he's trying to repeat Kirby's "I came home to accomplish something missing for a long time in Athens." In a sense, the same tone as the pitch given that 2008 class at Bama.

We will see some QB pop up this summer at one of Saban's camps and we will offer. The kid will be flying under the radar until BAMA offers. As soon as he commits, his stock will rise and 10-15 other offers will come.

I'm not concerned about these kids decommiting anymore. Saban has been doing pretty well with this recruiting thing and I trust him and his staff. Everyone was all doom and gloom back in January and we finished OK.

It's amazing to me that people think they just hand us the trophy every year and don't fully understand how difficult it is to win a Championship and to be the best team in the entire country with different players each year. Like it's not truly special what we have going on. Well I think Coach Sabana going after Bryant and achieving that kind of history is special and an accomplishment that only Alabama can reach at this point, unlike a Championship every 40 years and counting being special. Is it not more special to win more Championships in a short period of time over winning one every half century?

I fail to see any logic in that statement. I may be looking at it wrong, but it sounds like winning championships is not special to him and because we do it all the time sounds like a weak ass excuse. I'm probably looking at it out of context. :D

Jake Fromm, Rivals100 quarterback from Houston County High School in Warner Robins, Ga., flipped his commitment from Alabama to Georgia on Thursday morning. Fromm committed to Alabama in the summer. He was previously recruited by Kirby Smart for the Crimson Tide.

Fromm continued to say his commitment to Alabama was solid after Kirby Smart took the head coaching position at Georgia. Many thought a battle until the end for the elite prospect especially with the heavy amount of pressure to stay home.

The Alabama coaching staff was not caught off guard by Fromm's decision today. They had their suspicions for the last few months regarding his commitment.

Alabama will continue to recruit Him. However, the chances of him re-joining Alabama's class at some point during his recruitment is slim to none.

It's back to the drawing board for Alabama. The coaching staff will decide which quarterbacks to direct their focus throughout the spring and summer evaluations. Alabama wants a quarterback in this class. Nick Saban wants a quarterback in every class.

Yes, they are in great shape for some elite quarterbacks in 2018- Jack West, from Saraland High School in Ala., and Allan Walters, from Catholic High School in Paramus, N.J. Walters will spend a few days in Tuscaloosa at the end of March. Alabama could have a 2018 quarterback commitment prior to the fall, but still want one in 2017.

Alabama has offered some elite quarterbacks including Hunter Johnson, five-star from Brownsburg High School in Ind., Tate Martell, four-star from Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nv., and Shawn Robinson, four-star from Guyer High School in Denton, Texas. Johnson is committed to Clemson, Martell to Texas A&M and Robinson to TCU.

Former Auburn commitment Lowell Narcisse, four-star from Saint James High School in La., and Bailey Hockman, four-star from McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga., also report offers from Alabama.

A few other names to get to know who have yet to receive offers from Alabama: Sam Ehlinger, four-star from Westlake High School in Austin, Texas, and Davis Mills, four-star from Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross, Ga. Alabama has been in recent communication with both prospects. Ehlinger is committed to Texas.

More potential quarterback prospects will emerge during the next few months.

Especially this early in the process ...

One thing I'd like to see is a list of how many kids Alabama has signed that were committed to another school before signing their LOI in the Tide. A few can be named quickly. None are being criticized for flipping from another school to Bama, or "going back on their word."

Where's the fun in that?

Guilty as charged.

I say coaches can go wherever they want, the athletes ought to be able to go wherever they wish as well. Year to year. Not during the season. No sitting out a year since coaches don't have to sit out. It's funny, scholarships are offered on a yearly basis, but if you as an athlete want to leave and go to another school you have to sit out a year. It's BS.

This isn't directed at you, but this opinion in general ...

... here's an observation made by thousands, but I've yet to see an argument on how. Seeing it from Bama fans amuses me a bit; it's football programs like UA that make that big of a rule change impossible. The fear is a school like Bama would be able to poach talent with kids looking for the big stage. And, UA would be able to do just that.

Think about the recruiting world right now. Consider, just as one example, what's going on in Oxford. Now, mix that in with kids being able to go anywhere, anytime, with no penalty. How do you control that?

The suggestion coaches move without penalty is another comment that makes me smirk a little. Only a handful of coaches can move without penalty; one being Nick Saban. Think about it. UA was scoffed at when people found out Saban didn't have a buyout clause.

If you think that the penalty coaches have to pay isn't sufficient, I'd say you've got the basis for an argument. But, there's plenty of cases you can find where schools and coaches have had to pay.

On a side note: Look at the flip side of things: A coach can be fired and not have a job in September. A player who hasn't done his job well still gets his spot next season.
