Reports:
The stadium, which opened in 2017, seats 71,000 for football games but the expandable seating bumps the capacity to 75,000. Attendance for the last Alabama season opener in the stadium was announced at 71,916 for a 2019 game with Duke that Alabama won, 42-3.
Tickets for Alabama-Miami are currently listed for $130 and up on secondary sales sites when fees are included.
The delta variant of COVID-19 also remains a factor in the planning process, Stokan said, but they’re still working through those details. They had calls set up with Alabama and Miami as well as Ole Miss and Louisville who’ll play a Monday game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium as part of this opening weekend event.
“Well we’re talking through all the protocols with the four teams this week,” Stokan said. “Everybody’s waiting as long as they can just to make sure that they have full knowledge of where the variant is and coronavirus. And then we’re talking to Mercedes-Benz (Stadium) as well, learning what they’re doing with Atlanta United and the Falcons since they have a preseason game. So those, those conversations are going on now.”
Opening the retractable roof of the stadium is “one of the things amongst many that we’re looking at,” Stokan said.
As far as other mitigation plans, Stokan said they want to talk to each participating school to “hear what everybody’s comfortable with.”
Asked specifically about vaccine requirements for attendance that other NFL venues have instituted, Stokan “you look at everything.”
“But nothing to report on which way we’re going to go one way or the other,” Stokan said. “We’re just looking at everything right now again, just talking to the teams and talking to Mercedes-Benz to find out what’s the latest that everybody’s doing. Nothing to report or nothing concrete that we can say ‘This is what our protocol is.’”
As of last week, Mercedes-Benz Stadium wasn’t requiring face coverings in the general seating areas, only in “enclosed areas” like the stadium clubs and the team store. They are “strongly encouraged” in all other places in the stadium,
The AJC reported.
Alabama and Miami are set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT with the game airing on ABC-TV.
