| LIFE Pictures of the day -- From the wild to the crazy to the beautiful.

My now deceased FIL once told me a story about a friend of his who lived deep in the Bankhead forest. He said his friend's mom gave birth to twins who died a couple of days later. The family buried the twins in the back yard of their homeplace. My FIL thought it would have been between 1900 -1910. We finally found the old homeplace before Thanksgiving and the two little graves. Patsy had carried some flowers to put on the graves. The mound in the upper left of the picture is the remnants of the old chimney.

Did you know what to look for?
No. My FIL knew the creek the home place was located on and which side of the creek. We found it about a mile and a half from where we parked off of the main highway, hwy 33, through Bankhead Forest.

The old home places almost always have a recognizable pile of rocks of a chimney, sometimes even a partially standing chimney.

One of descendants, a great, great grandchild, verified the story and had seen the graves. I knew the graves stones were there 40 years ago when the grandchildren made a visit to their ancestors home. From their description of the graves, we kinda knew what to look for once we located the old home place.

I carried two dowsing rods and verified they were graves, which will open another conversation probably.

I couldn't see any markings on the grave stones either. Sometimes on old gravestones there will be a cross or a name and info scratched on the surface.

When I shared the pictures, the family said that was the graves of the two babies.
