PREDICTION NO. 1
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the season will be played and will get to the finish line, which will be the College Football Playoff. Why? A sudden outbreak at Ole Miss notwithstanding (unconfirmed word is that it was mostly cheerleaders), teams seem to be doing a good job of protecting themselves and it seems to be more palpable to play even if all classes are online for all students. Players want to play. Their families want them to play. The SEC, ACC and Big 12 have the resources to make it possible.
PREDICTION NO. 2
The Iron Bowl winner will represent the West in the SEC Championship Game. I keep hearing about all the great players Texas A&M has and keep wondering why it hasnāt shown up on the field. LSU lost lots of players, including the quarterback that had a season for the ages en route to the national championship last season.
PREDICTION NO. 3
The Florida-Georgia winner will win the East. What else is new? Tennessee and Kentucky are getting lots of love, but I believe there is still a significant gap between the top two and everybody else in the East.
PREDICTION NO. 4
Auburn will beat LSU. Auburn should have won two of the last three and could have won all three. That doesnāt count, of course, because LSU has won all three. But it shows there isnāt much of a talent gap between the two teams. Auburn is playing at home and Auburn has a significant edge at quarterback.
PREDICTION NO. 5
Speaking of quarterbacks, Bo Nix will be the best in the SEC and a first team All-SEC selection. The caveat is his offensive line giving him time and room to operate. Why do I believe he will be ahead of Texas A&Mās Kellen Mond, Floridaās Kyle Trask and Alabamaās Mac Jones? Simply because I believe he is a better player than any of them. Maybe one of Georgiaās transfers will emerge, but I donāt really expect that to happen.
PREDICTION NO. 6
Auburn junior Shaun Shivers will get the seasonās first rep at running back. Heās not big enough to carry the ball 20-25 times every game, though he believes he is. Heās explosive, heās a team leader and knows what heās doing better than any freshman will at the start of the season. Besides, he deserves to start just because of knocking Xavier McKinneyās helmet off and running through him for the winning touchdown in the Iron Bowl.
PREDICTION NO. 7
Senior Auburn Buck T.D. Moultry will have a big year. Moultry has had his struggles, but it hasnāt been for lack talent or lack of effort. He is a conscientious guy and hard worker. He wonāt be the first play to finally blossom his senior year.
PREDICTION NO. 8
No SEC team will lose fewer than two games in the regular season. Playing 10 SEC games isnāt all that much different than playing eight SEC games and a challenging nonconference against a Power 5 team. Playing those 10 games in 11 weeks is very different. Even if COVID-19 doesnāt cost teams players, everybody will have to play beaten and bruised. The SEC champion will get to the College Football Playoff anyway.
PREDICTION NO. 9
Sophomore Owen Pappoe will have a breakout season and will make All-SEC. Heās a talented and dedicated guy. Heās also now an experienced guy. Thatās a good combination. By the way, that doesnāt mean K.J. Britt wonāt be All-SEC, too, for the second consecutive season.
PREDICTION NO. 10
My guesses for the first week of the season:
Auburn 27, Kentucky 13, Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn
Alabama 34, Missouri 14, Faurot Field, Columbia, Mo.
Florida 38, Ole Miss 28, Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Oxford, Miss.
Georgia 30, Arkansas 10, Reynolds Razorback Stadium,
