🏈 Phillip Ely considering transfer from Alabama

In April of last year, Phillip Sims opted to transfer out of the Alabama football program thanks to AJ McCarron holding a firm grip on the starting quarterback job.

Nine months later, and with McCarron continuing to build on a legacy that includes two straight BCS titles, another Phillip at the position is apparently looking to pull a Sims as well.

Well, it appears that since we gave Phillip Sims such a great sendoff that Phillip Ely is now considering transferring as well?

Assuming we are at the limit of 85 scholarships, and I don't know because I honestly haven't been able to keep up with it, we are only losing a handful of players this year. Like, less than 15. And we are signing at least 25.

The math is simple. Some guys aren't willing to ride the bench for a few years waiting on playing time. If he goes, I wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Well consider the incoming class:

Parker McLeod from Marietta, GA. The kid is over looked in this class a lot but he's a good one with offers from the likes of offensive teams like Oklahoma State and Louisville.

Cooper Bateman from Salt Lake City, UT - At 6' 3", he is almost too short to see over the OL that Saban has recruited. ;) He has a good arm and is rather mobile. He needs some polish, no doubt, but has all the attributes to be a good one. He reminds me a lot of AJ coming out of high school. 5 SEC schools offered this kid.

Luke Del Rio - Denver, Colorado - He's coming to Alabama without an offer from the Tide. He had solid offers from OK State (take that Gundy!) and Oregon St. The kid obviously has a set so I am curious to see if he's my next favorite walk on at QB since David Smith. If you don't remember seeing him you forgot what a great "baller" he was.

With all that quality coming in, Ely may not like his own chances and you can't blame the guy. He can subscribe to any recruiting web site and view the competition for himself. I am sure he is choosing the best route for himself.

I put this in the same category as with Lacy. With what's already there and with what's coming the likelihood of getting on the field in a capacity that could improve your chances of getting to the next level is slim.

Not talking bad on Lacy, but with Yeldon his carries were going to decrease and then you add all the other talent we have there then you add the talent we have coming and the writing becomes clear

My thoughts as well. I wasn't shocked when I read he was going to transfer. I wish him the best.

Also, it's important to realize that Saban constantly sits down with his players and discusses where they are with the team, where they can improve. Specifically, I believe, he meets with them after the season is over, and he begins the new season of preparation, and tries to set goals.

I'm sure he and Ely have discussed where he is on the depth chart, and who he has coming in and I'd be willing to bet are on the same page with this decision...or have at least had plenty of conversation on the subject.

Yeah, and there's also Alec Morris already on the roster as well.

Honestly, I don't blame Ely. At 6-1 and 198, he was facing a real uphill climb against the competition on board and coming aboard. I wish him well.

Would you prefer ill will?

No, I would prefer he stay. An able well coach capable game ready backup quarterback is probably the second most import position on the team.

I see no need to wish him ill will, but I just don't understand sending these guys that quit to play elsewhere with what amounts to a ticker tape parade? A quitter is not a hero...

I guess I am from another generation and just don't understand this new "me generation".

Let's just say I am glad Mal Moore decided to do the right thing and stick it out when he was the backup quarterback to Joe Namath and Pat Trammel...

Who in the world is sending him off with a ticker tape parade or calling him a hero?

some of us realize these are just young men who are still thinking about their future and what's the best thing to realize their dreams and aspirations......sitting on the bench to just collect Rings is far worse then trying to be a starter elsewhere...sometimes things just don't work out in the present situation......

LMAO at the fact that this is somehow a generational thing, and that this is even selfish.

It's not like he's leaving us high and dry. The way it's looking right now, next year he'd probably be our #4 QB (not THE backup, or the backup's backup). That's assuming that these Freshman coming in don't jump him.

The way I see our depth progression at QB right now is like this: McCarron, A. Morris, B. Sims, Ely - I could be wrong with Morris/Sims, but just from what I've heard Morris has been pretty impressive.

Needless to say, he's completely buried on the depth chart, including one QB from a class below him. Him leaving isn't being selfish, it's being smart and doing what's best for his future.

I agree with you, barring an injury Sims will probably see the field more (in certain packages) but if we needed someone to come in it would be Morris (unless one of these Freshman jumps up like you said).
