Savage created controversy when he received an e-mail from a Browns fans during the Bills game, which read:<SUP class=reference id=cite_ref-1>[2]</SUP>

You are easily the worst GM in the NFL. Chud, Crennel and Tucker should NOT have jobs. How the hell do you play prevent defense the entire game? How do you NOT use Jerome Harrison more? Why the hell would you throw the ball with 6 minutes left? This is officially a regime that is worse than Butch Davis'. By the way, just like last week - this email was written while the Browns still had the lead.

I don't have an opinion of Savage. I've never heard him, so I guess I'll have to wait and see. Please tell me he'll bring some energy and enthusiasm.

I have a pretty high opinion of Savage as a person. He helps Mike Gottfried quite a bit with his mentoring of fatherless boys in and around the Mobile area. I have heard him several times on D & B radio as well. I really like who he is and he appears to have a genuine love of all that is Alabama.......................having said that. I think sports marketing screwed the proverbial pooch on this one. While some are a little more dynamic speakers than others Krause, Barker, or Shultz would have been a better pic IMO. I especially like the angle that Terry hit on with Krause's knowledge of the 3-4 and how cool it would be to have him as color pickin apart CNS schemes. Krause and Barker are a bit more polished, but Shultz would make up for that with enthusiasm and humor.

I imagine that CNS having a previous relationship with Savage tying back to the old days at Cleveland is where this stems from. I'm guessing, but I bet it is a good guess.

Here's something to add to that.

I made that comment about Krause and since I've learned that Savage worked with Saban as one of his defensive assistants.

So, I'd dare say that he'll be able to offer up as good of an analysis on Saban's defense as anyone. At least on the way the secondary works...

And, I do agree with your last statement...Saban's endorsement rang the proverbial bell on this hire.

As soon as I heard this news today I started thinking about the last time I actually listened to the radio team during a game. I can't remember exactly what year it was...but it was the game we played against MSU when there was no TV coverage, at all...not even PPV.

I can remember where I was...but can't recall the year.

Which is sad, because I remember when my dad and I would listen to the radio during every game...last year we didn't even bother.

I've been working in Bham part of the week, and listened to Finebaum (I know, I know - I turn it off when the callers start attacking each other). A caller commented that he believes (not that he knows) that Saban may actively use Savage in the program, perhaps as a talent analyst or a de facto player personnel director.

Any thoughts on that angle?

Can you say Kellen Winslow? I'm sure that was part of it, but probably not the nail. Lerner fired him because of the record while he was there.
