Auburn players asked Alabama to ‘chill’ during Iron Bowl blowout

Alabama can really wear down its opponents, both mentally and physically.

In this year’s Iron Bowl, Alabama TE O.J. Howard said that once the game was in hand, Auburn players were asking the Crimson Tide to take it easy.

“In the Iron Bowl, it’s a field goal and a lot of people take off on (the) extra point,” Howard said, according to the Montgomery Advertiser’s Duane Rankin. “Our guys, our O-linemen like Cam (Robinson), those guys are coming off hard every play. They’ll say, ‘Ah man, chill bruh.’ Stuff like that. That’s no disrespect to those guys, but we can’t chill because we’re going to get in trouble with our coach. We’ve got to go hard, man.”

Alabama had the Iron Bowl all but wrapped up with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter after a 38-yard touchdown pass to ArDarius Stewart to make it 27-9. Having to go more than another full quarter against the No. 1 team in the country at that point is demoralizing. Doing it when the Crimson Tide is still attacking on every snap is even worse.

Apparently, that wasn’t an unusual thing for Alabama to deal with this season, according to Howard.

“When they start joking with you on the field,” he said. “When they start talking about other stuff. ‘Let’s get out of here.’ When they do that and you can see it in their face, you know it’s over with.”
