Red Zone Offense: Bama is #1. LSU is #72

Red Zone Defense: Bama is #1. LSU is #115


And now the 'Rest of the Story':

Bama is tied with Louisville At #1 in RZ Offense. LSU is tied at #72 with UNC, No Ill, Kent St, UNLV, Colo, Hawaii, and (are you sitting down?) AUBURN.

Bama stands alone at #1 in RZ Defense. LSU is tied at #115 with Texas and Colorado.

Interesting that they are tied in both categories with Colorado, one of the worst teams in 1A.

One thing to keep in mind here.

When teams are getting into the red zone vs LSU are scoring.

However, the key word here is when. They've only allowed 17 red zone opportunities on the year which puts them in the top 10 in points allowed.

The hard thing to do is getting in the redzone, last year we had some trouble with that

This year with McCarron having more experience in this game, having experience against LSU's defense last year, having some better receivers, better o-line play (slightly).

Interested to see Michael Williams play in this game, how motivated he will be after last year...Though he may have to help in pass blocking situations with Kounj. and Fluker..He has had some pretty good games as of recent

Washington
FG - LSU fumbled away the opening kickoff, giving UW the ball on the 20. Drive went nowhere, but Washington was basically given a score and did nothing else the rest of the game.

North Texas
TD - sustained drive starting in UNT territory

Towson
FG - Hilliard lost a fumble at the LSU 38, setting up the FG
TD - 43 yard rush stopped at the 1, followed by a TD.
TD - sustained drive starting in Towson territory
TD - sustained drive starting in Towson territory, assisted by facemask and pass interference penalties

Auburn
TD - Mettenberger lost a fumble at the LSU 26, AU scored from 4 yards out 3 plays later.

Florida
TD - sustained drive, assisted by LSU facemask penalty
TD - sustained drive, assisted by LSU personal foul penalty

SC
TD - Mettenberger had an interception returned 70 yards to the 2, followed by a TD.
TD - SC had a 29 yard pass play stopped at the 2, followed by a TD.


Texas A&M
TD - sustained drive, no LSU penalties
FG - sustained drive, no LSU penalties
TD - sustained drive, assisted by LSU facemask penalty

Things like big plays ending at the 1 or 2 sure don't help RZ defense stats.

LSU also has a lot of penalties this year (117th @ 64.88 per game), which contributed to several sustained scoring drives

Pass blocking is one reason I believe we'll see more Lacy than Yeldon this weekend. If you've noticed, when it comes to third downs it's Eddie—TJ still having blocking and recognition issues.

I mentioned this several weeks ago and it's going to apply again this week. A few years ago we stalled in the RZ with TD's which ended up being three instead of six points often.

Now, I see the team stalling but it's outside the red zone. There's something about the area between the 20-40 yard line that seems to give the offense fits.

Coach Homer Smith used to LOVE the +40yd line area! I think that was when his offenses excelled most. You have virtually every play in your playbook at your disposal. I guess the issue or problem could be that..... you have the entire playbook at your disposal and yoy can't decide on one!
