šŸ’¬ Number of Illinois high school graduates going out of state for college jumped 73% since 2000. One university has emerged as an unlikely hot spot: UA

I didn't read the article. Why is it unlikely? Who wouldn't want to go to Alabama?
I've read some of her stuff in the past. I realize this is stereotyping, but with good reason to think the way I do based purely on what she's written.

A Michigan undergrad, Northwestern Grad school graduate, African-American, who has written for newspapers in Chicago and Los Angeles. Would you expect her to think it's normal for "kids to leave the North to attend school in the south, at Alabama?" I suspect cultural bias in spades here.

I do not know her personally nor much of her writing. That said, if she truly believes that we are the worst, most backwards, racist area, she needs to do some research. Alabama definitely has had it's issues with racism and several marks against it during the civil rights movement. That said, the most famous leader of the civil rights movement, MLK Jr, said he encountered the worst racism in Chicago and LA, where she has lived and worked. Until the marches in those cities, they were just better at hiding their racism. Then it all exploded during those marches. The only reason it did not become a massacre was better police presence in those cities. Not that there were not and still are not racist cops in those cities, they were just instructed better than the police in Birmingham and Selma, to save face nationally.
