💬 NFL down again in '17. Is it the product, or is it the politics surrounding the product?

The NFL’s three primetime game packages saw another round of declines during the ’17 regular season, including a multiyear low for "Thursday Night Football," a record-low audience for "Monday Night Football" and the lowest figure for "Sunday Night Football" in a decade. These results were a surprise to both network and league execs, both of whom expected better viewership coming off of the over-heated presidential race last year.

NBC averaged 18.2 million viewers for its “SNF” games, marking the package's lowest figure since ’08, when it averaged 16.6 million viewers. This year also is down 11% from '16, and down 19% from two seasons ago. But while “SNF” was down again, it has actually increased its lead over other entertainment and scripted TV shows in primetime.

In its 12th year with the “SNF” package, NBC had its widest margin of victory of those shows. “SNF” viewership was 30% higher than the most-viewed scripted show -- CBS’ “Big Bang Theory” -- and 40% better than the second-best scripted show -- CBS’ “NCIS.” “SNF” also remains on pace to be the most-viewed primetime show for the seventh straight year, which would be a record for all of TV dating back to ’50. Eight of the top 10 most-viewed primetime TV programs in the fall were “SNF” games (World Series Games 6 and 7 were the other two). As recently as two to three years ago, there was much talk about AMC’s “The Walking Dead” challenging “SNF” among adults 18-49. But for the fall, “SNF” finished 61% higher in the demo compared to the Sunday night zombie show. This will be the 10th straight season that “SNF” has won the 18-49 demo. When factoring in streaming on NBC Sports Digital properties, “SNF” viewership jumps to 18.4 million viewers, a figure that might increase next season with NBC acquiring rights to stream games to mobile devices.

LAST CALL: After being up for most of ‘17, a weak finish to the regular season led ESPN to the least-viewed “MNF” slate on record. The net’s games averaged 10.8 million viewers, beneath the previous low of 11.2 million viewers in ’07. “MNF” was down 6% from ’16, and down 17% from two years ago. ESPN won primetime on all of TV for 10 of its 16 game nights (including one tie). For the fall season, "MNF" was again the No. 1 show on cable TV, ahead of "The Walking Dead" and HBO's "Game of Thrones." ESPN also saw 29% growth in game streaming this year, and like NBC, will have the ability to stream games to mobile devices for the ’18 season.

SPREAD OPTION: The “TNF” package averaged 10.9 million viewers in ’17 across NBC, CBS and NFL Network. That package included 13 Thursday night games, as well as one Sunday morning game, two Saturday afternoons, one Saturday night and a Christmas Day game (on a Monday afternoon). That average of 10.9 million viewers was the lowest “TNF” figure since broadcast networks became partners in the package in ’14. “TNF” viewership was down 12% from both ’16 and ’15. While down from recent years, the portion of "TNF" that airs on NBC and CBS has established itself as a top five primetime TV property.

WHO’S THE BOSS? Milwaukee in ’17 was the top-rated market for “SNF” games for the first time since ’12. New Orleans and Richmond tied for No. 2, with Denver and Seattle-Tacoma rounding out the top five. Denver led “SNF” from ’14-16. Meanwhile, New Orleans was the top “MNF” market in ’17, followed by Norfolk, Richmond, San Diego and Philadelphia.

For me it’s been the product. There have been some terrible games this year. I’ve kept watching off and on (picking up the games after kickoff) because, as I’ve said before, I didn’t care what these guys thought before the kneeling/protesting started so their beliefs now are no more interesting than they were then. But, I’ll never spend another dime on NFL apparel or pay to see a game.

Both. I was at my dad's for Christmas Eve and said I was surprised he wasn't watching the Falcons. He, my brother-in-law, and my nieces boyfriends all agreed they aren't watching since players started taking a knee. At our house we have not purposefully refused to watch games, but we also haven't just had the TV running all Sunday with the games like normal on either. Without anything compelling to watch I have found that I have other things to do.

Large part of demographic watching NFL diametrically opposed to idea of kneeling during the national anthem. Whoops?!

They’re getting what’s coming to them. I can’t get excited about the NFL anyway so it doesn’t matter to me.

Horrible officiating, inconsistent application of the rules (bias for certain teams), spoiled brat players, grotesquely overpaid Commissioner, boring teams, too many ridiculous rules (what's a catch)... what's not to like?

I guess I'm the odd ball here but I still watched it because it's football. I love college football and I guess just like the NFL. I didn't let the kneeling / politics keep me from watching the games. I still bought Papa John's pizza when it was conveinent to do so.

Said it many times but sports and politics don't mix... For ratings at least.

I'm not one of them but I personally know a handful of guys who just quit watching.

Again the best irony is that there are people from "both sides" of the spectrum boycotting. Lots of folks unhappy Kap didn't get a job so refuse to support... Meanwhile the right doesn't watch due to Kneelers. And the funniest part is that the dorky liberals who support the protests in general don't really watch football. In Colorado they're hiking, skiing, and/or smoking weed and using free internet at the coffee shop :D

Product. I'm with you...with this exception.
and find out how the BAMA guys did!
If I'm hanging out with friends and there's a game one I'll watch. My entertainment isn't so much the game itself, but the players I recognize from their days in college. If I had a dollar for everytime I've been in a bar, or with friends, and asked the question, "do you know where he went to school?" (FWIW, most people answer, "was it Bama?")
Or is it cord cutting like every thing else in TV that is hurting...
I'm sure that's part of it. The night that's shown an increase is Sunday Night Football when there's very little competition that night anyway.

Overall, the NFL a poor product and not very entertaining. I agree that the officiating is horrid and implementing a replay for everything is getting old as it disrupts the flow of the game. Honestly, if it wasn't for fantasy football I probably wouldn't watch any games.

We're sure hoping P-Diddy doesn't win the bid for the Panthers. He's already said he'd hire Kap day 1. He'll run off a lot of fans.

Those guys are really pushing for a minority owned team and hoping that helps them win the bid. Anyone think like me that it could help them win over a higher money offer? Am I crazy to think that? I say let the group with the highest bid and if possible, deciding factor be the ones that agree to keep the team in Charlotte, win the team. I'm a fan of free enterprise.
Our city just spent a ton of $$ on Panther/BofA stadium 2 years ago and Jerry agreed not to come back for a certain number of years for more and to keep the team here for so many more years. That's all out the window with new owners. The last ask made a majority of residents upset but politicians didn't care, as usual.... Another threat within a year or 2 will spark outrage. We want a team but not at the costs these guys are demanding. Team owners have these cities by the short hairs. A shame. I wish at the Federal level they'd cut off all funding to sports teams. And make it illegal for lower municipalities to fund them. These owners know they don't have to spend their billions. The rest of us common folks fund their wallets. Hell, anytime I go out to eat I'm sending $ to the stadium. Alright, off my soap box....

I find this topic interesting as there are tons of different factors that I feel are influencing these rating drops (cord cutting, protests, the product on the field, etc.)

What I would be interested to see would be the TV ratings for college football. Are college ratings down as well? You don't heard college ratings discussed nearly as much as NFL. I'd be interested to see what the prime time college games look like from year to year. I think that would pretty telling...

Maybe this is why the NFL is down on ESPN and CBS? Have any of you been missing this lady doing college games. It because she doing the NFL this year, Beth Mowins is now doing the pro games this year. I know a lot of you really love listening to her doing the college games! :rolf:

And i have always loved football and the NFL....but the protest turned me so off....
As did the second mlb strike....and my love for baseball...which i havent watched in many years...
They have a right to protest...and i have a right to not watch...
The product is poor...the score...commercial...kick off out of end zone..commercial....just s boring...period...
Saw where there is a bill in Indiana....that refunds ticket cost...if players kneel...and the buyer wants a refund..good idea..wont pass..not politically correct...
Direct tv refunded $ of nfl package this year...if a buyer wanted...
And some nba player...James..is spewing his antiTrump stuff...shut up...
No place for it...and why the espn keeps that bitch who keeps up her tirade of antiTrump stuff... those white males who made anti/gay/whatever were fired....keep poitic n sports seperate...
