🏈 New ILBs Coach... Freddie Roach?

Since Tucker is headed to UGA with Kirby and Pruitt is replacing Kirby as DC/DBs coach, that leaves an opening for the ILBs coaching spot, as you all well know.

Roach coached LBs at USA before taking a support staff position Here last year.

We've hired other support staffers in the last week, which means that someone might be promoted from within.

Then, there's this:

@AndrewJBone: Freddie Roach has turned down a position on the #SouthCarolina staff. Will remain at #Alabama. @TideSports @AaronSuttles

Could it be that he turned down that job because he's about to be promoted to the perfect on-the-field job for his experience?

I think so.

Not sure where you got that Kirby was coaching the DBs? He was coaching the Linebackers. Mel Tucker was the secondary coach which I would assume Pruitt will now take over. Regardless there is an opening for linebackers, dont know if Tosh could work with both inside and outsider backers or not.

Meant to say that he will replace Kirby as DC AND Coach DBs.

I know Kirby coached LBs.

But, he coached DBs before that.

And no, Tosh will not coach both. They're both totally different positions.

As I recall, Kirby has coached the secondary, went to the linebackers, back to the secondary, and then finished his time with the linebackers, didn't he? It seems Kirby was coaching the secondary in 2014, was he not?

Kirby definitely went back and forth. It was either the '13 or '14 season that had him with DBs.
Like @Sgt. Lincoln Osiris said @Birdman37 , the inside and outside backer spots are different animals and require different skill sets. To get the best out of both, requires full attention on the needed skills for their positions. Don't want OLBs standing and watching while ILBs work on taking on blocks from guards or FBs or vice versa, OLBs taking on tackles or pullers, or pass rushing drills.

X what when it comes to playing this type of scheme. Geez.

, no one has addressed the main topic in the OP:

I read it this morning and have had it cross my mind a few times since. I'm not sure if I like the idea or not.

He's in Player Personnel. With the transitions happening and the importance those positions are to recruiting and visits I like him where he is ... it's that old Bama connection that Saban talks about (which Pruitt brings in spades.)

Here's where I'm having an issue. At USA he was coaching OLB and DE's. That's where Tosh is now.

Lance had years of experience at the same position and look at the improvement we've seen from the OLB's with Tosh. Freddie, seems like a step back; a big one.
I certainly don't like the idea of him coaching ILB's with no experience there.

For now ... keep him where he is for another year. That would give him four years in the system.

It's possible though his coaching experience was mostly DEs and OLBs, which potentially gives the option to move Tosh to ILBs and bring Freddie in for OLBs.

But, that is all speculation as the USCe job wasn't specified outside of "staff position." If it was a confirmed on field role at USCe, I'd say odds are that you're 100% right. But, if it were another staffer role similar to what he holds at UA, he may simply have not wanted to uproot and/or move to far away from family.

I really like Freddie and think it would be awesome for him to get a shot given all that he has put into the program as a player and assistant over the years. However, I think it would be a surprise move. I really expect a bigger, more well known name to be brought in on the defensive staff.

All valid, but..

Did you even know who Tosh was when he was hired as a support staffer here? I didn't. And I follow the program closely. Know a couple of assistants semi-personally.

I had to Google him when we hired him, yet he was promoted to on-the-field very quickly.

I'd only heard of him before because of NCAA allegations while under Sark at UW

That said, he came on board with D1 experience at 2x schools, west coast connections in recruiting, and a couple of All Americans under his belt as a position coach. CNS found a bargain in getting a proven assistant coach with recruiting prowess as an analyst while the NCAA mess played out.

I think Tucker was the big name draw CNS added to that side of the ball to influence an area of need and add a nice boost just before signing day.

This is why I've been a big fan of mending fences with Sal and bringing him back. Great recruiter, a known quantity with NFL experience and positive credentials at his position group.

Freddie is awesome. I went to school with and grew up around his family. I'd have zero issues with the promotion personally. But, unless you grew up in the Florence/killen area or follow Bama football, you are more likely to think Bama hired a legendary boxing trainer to staff when you hear Freddie Roach. I just expect a more nationally known guy to be tabbed for the remaining spot.

Wasn't it Kirby 07-09 and then Pruitt '10-'11 and then back to Kirby until '14 and Mel took over? I think thats how it went.

Guest analyst on The Game (99.1), William Barger, said a couple segments ago that Freddie Roach promotion to ILBs coach is a done deal.

Barger covers Alabama exclusively, and has lots of info inside.

One of his sources is close friends with the Sabans, and also said that CNS was planning on retiring sometime around the age of 70. But after this past season, his batteries are recharged and said that "we might want to push that back to age 72 or 73"

Maybe because he scoops stories before they do, and he's independent?

When has he scooped anything about Bama? Braxton Miller was a lock to be our QB in the fall? Yes sir, that was one of his scoops.

He's another Scott Moore. He's certainly not new to Bama, or a newbie trying to be a "news breaker." He's stirred the pot on more than one forum in his day. I'm pretty certain he was involved in Alabama's latest probation scandal (before Textbook gate) and Travis Carroll.

He did try to go the independent route and start his own premium web site. That ended with him getting subscription money and then shutting the site down. He didn't get my money, but the point he ripped some Bama fans off shouldn't go unnoticed.
