šŸˆ New athletic related academic scandal brewing at the barn

Why is this an "academic scandal?" I do think it's funny that they use UNC as an example of another school that does something similar. The same UNC that is under investigation by the NCAA for multiple academic irregularities.

Really nothing different than any other institution that fields athletic teams. For every one engineering major, there was 8-10 business majors and education majors while I was at UA. It is funny how the writer points at the UNC scandal and tries to make the comparison. I hate the cow humpers as much as anyone here, but I don't see this amounting to anything at all. IF they dig up and find where these athletes never went to class, didn't do any of the work, etc. then I will want the NCAA to hammer that ass!!

Even at the high school level athletes are channeled to certain courses and certain teachers, especially those athletes whose academics are suspect. As @uagrad93 said, if they have arrangements within this major for athletes to avoid class attendance or do minimal work then the hammer should come down.

The new sociology scandal. This, the spice scandal, the trailer park 4 robberies, the monitoring of players by security companies, multiple racial based assaults on students and recruits by the former center, murders etc., all under the watch of AD Jay Jacobs and while Gus Malzahn was coaching either as a OC or HC.

At Auburn, Athletics and Academics Collide

Public administration majors account for less than 1% of Auburn’s undergraduate student body. But in the fall semester of 2013, documents show, 51% of the 111 students pursuing the degree were athletes. Among them were the football team’s starting quarterback and running back, its leading wide receiver and the three defensive players who led the team in interceptions, tackles and sacks. At the time the athletic department learned of the plan to close the major, Auburn’s football team was coming off its worst season in a half-century and had just fired its coach. The following season, the team would win the Southeastern Conference and lose to Florida State in the national-championship game.

This February, in response to a question from Auburn’s faculty senate, Boosinger asked the school’s institutional research office to examine enrollment data for athletes. The report showed that 26 football players, or 32% of the 2014 team, were majoring in public administration. In May, documents show, Boosinger appointed an internal committee to review these enrollment trends and make recommendations about what actions might be appropriate.

.. and some of the teachers and counselors are bullied into going along with it. Happens at SU, too.

This scandal is upsetting for several reasons to me. 1) its the barn and they suck 2) they have the opportunities with tutors and the real university to help the guys get a real degree that will benefit them forever. This is taking a shortcut which is easy to sell to an 18 year old that they will guarantee them a degree. But these kids will be in big trouble when they can't keep a real job later because they have no real education.

I know there are kids that play football that aren't smart enough to be lawyers, or accountants, doctors or business men. But there are other degrees that they can do with the help of the tutors that would be a fit for them and really benefit them after football.

Besides for the obvious that Auburn is cheating and taking advantage of kids and unaware parents, they are really screwing over the future for these kids. Football doesn't last long what will you do when its over go into public administration or sociology?

Think about it really, 51% of the football team has the same major and less than 1% of the total university is in that major..what are the odds of that. It's the new sociology and Jay Jacobs is nothing more than the bad slave owner determined to keep his athletes uneducated so he can be the puppet master.. just wrong and I wish recruits and their parents would stand up and demand that they do better.

One of my favorite parts of the changes that Saban made was when he started was the academic center. The athletes have tutors, computers and many other resources to help them achieve their academic goals. I have a couple young guys I work with who played football under Saban and their exact words were that with the academic center and tutors you almost have to not try at all in order to not get your degree.

This empowers kids to be able to achieve instead of helping them cheat the system.
