📝 National Signing Day - 2018

I notice not a lot of chatter around here about Peterson possibly flipping back to Bama. If Walker flips to Tennessee/Georgia, I would think that Peterson would put us way ahead of the game at that position when it's said and done. Surtain just feels like a get to me. Even a little honest soul-searching tells him the odds of winning a championship in the next 3 years at LSU is highly unlikely.

I think and agree that A LOT of people feel that JJ Peterson to UT is a done deal because of the relationship with Pruitt, even though Propst came out Sunday and said he felt it was 50-50 between BAMA and UT and that BAMA seems to be surging. I think it is likely Propst trying to blow smoke up people's ass in an attempt to give Pruitt and UT that splash signee.

Did Propst get a job with Tennessee or is that still to be determined? If so he is probably just trying to keep it from looking like a package deal and raising red flags with the NCAA.

Wes will be a preferred walk-on for the defending national champion Crimson Tide.
He turned down a scholarship offer from Delta State and heavy interest from other schools, including Samford and Florida Atlantic, for the chance to play at Alabama.

"Wes has really worked hard for two years," Bob Baumhower said. "This last year was just over the top for him. They (Alabama) contacted him out of the blue. They really made him feel good about things. He is doing this 100 percent for him and 100 percent on his own. I'm excited he's happy and doing something he wants to do."

Exactly my sentiments. Nothing bigger than winning a recruit over Alabama, so they'll say.

Per Andrew Bone 12 noon:
Coaches from all over the country are still fighting for kids (despite the dead period). It’s an all out war for some of these top remaining guys.

How crazy is it? As of this afternoon I’m hearing it’s a dead heat between Alabama and Florida for Malik Langham. I was told that earlier this morning but after talking to a few more sources it’s pretty accurate. That’s also coming from a source very close to Langham.

It’s crunch time that’s for sure. I’ve never spoken with this many contacts and reporters (from other teams) the day before signing day who simply do not know the direction of this many targets. A lot of people are guessing on these final predictions. I feel pretty good on some but definitely not all.

I’ve heard Waddle is an Alabama lean as of this afternoon but A&M is still fighting hard. Coaches are not backing down in any part of the country.

Alabama is fighting tooth and nail for Nick Petit-Frere. I’ve heard he continues to give very positive vibes to the Crimson Tide. At the same time other programs are telling him that he will walk in and start from day one.

Alabama is not in panic mode. Fans don’t need to be in panic mode either. Alabama will sign a great class on Wednesday. It’s just uncertain exactly what will transpire.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Whichever team gets five-star receiver Justyn Ross on Wednesday’s National Signing Day won’t be signing a track star or a combine hero. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound wideout is a football player, and a damn good one at that.

Ross, who will choose between Alabama, Auburn and Clemson, will be one of Wednesday’s most anticipated signings. The top-rated player in Alabama is ranked as the No. 2 receiver and No. 15 overall recruit in the 2018 class.

Unlike other five-star playmakers, he received his status as one of the nation’s elite without a flashy 40 time or combine numbers. Ross posted a 4.87 time in the 40 during the Nike Combine for The Opening last summer. The slow time raised some eyebrows initially, but those uncertainties were soon expunged by anyone who watched him on the football field.

Central-Phenix City head coach Jamey Dubose doesn’t know what Ross’ time in the 40 would be if he ran it today. Central doesn’t typically have its players run the 40-yard dash, and Ross as only ran it twice. What the head coach does know is that he never had a problem with anyone catching his star receiver during games.

Ross finished his senior season with 37 receptions for 730 yards and 13 touchdowns while also returning 14 punts for 383 yards and two more scores. Those stats came with several eye-popping highlights, including a one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone against Lee (Montgomery) in the Class 7A quarterfinals which landed him an appearance on SportsCenter’s top 10.

“Football is about blocking and tackling and making plays under pressure situations when you’re getting hit. Justyn Ross is a football player,” Dubose said. “Justyn Ross is a guy that when the lights come on he’s going to be as fast as he needs to be to make plays, and he’s going to be as fast as any four-star guy around.

“Justyn’s never trained at running a 40. He’s never put his hand down or come off the block or any of the other things these guys do to manipulate their rankings. There are combine guys and there are football players. Justyn Ross is a real football player.”

Ross will announce his decision at noon Wednesday from his high school. While Ross hasn’t given a frontrunner, Dubose stated that the opportunity to earn immediate playing time will be a key factor.

“He’s a very mature and really good football player. He’s a guy that is going to get even better over the next few years, but he’s an unbelievable talent and he’s a guy that wants to get in and contribute quick,” Dubose said. “He wants to get into an offense that can get him the ball. He’s a team player, it’s not all about him. But like every guy that goes in he wants an opportunity to get on the field.”

Alabama will be without its top receiver in Calvin Ridley this season but returns a trio of talented freshmen in Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III and DeVonta Smith who combined for 33 receptions for 649 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, despite the Crimson Tide’s depth at the position Ross offers a much-needed skill set.

Alabama returns just two receivers over 6-foot-2 next season. One of those is rising senior Derek Kief (6-foot-4, 204 pounds), who recorded two receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown this past season. The other is Tyrell Shavers (6-foot-6, 209 pounds) who redshirted during his first season on campus last year. Dubose believes Ross would not only give the Crimson Tide another big target but could also step in as one of Alabama’s best blockers.

“He’s a big, strong, talented guy that can run inside routes or outside routes,” Dubose said. "A lot of longer receivers seem to be more oriented to run outside routes, but Justyn is smooth enough running his routes from either inside or outside.”

“He’s probably the best blocking wide receiver I’ve ever seen. There have been numerous times he’s put a DB into the sideline. We’ve had a flag thrown on him for excessive blocking or roughness. I’m not really sure what the call was one night. He loves to block, that’s something people don’t realize about him. When you come out and watch him, you definitely notice how physical he is. As good of a route runner as he is and as good of hands as he has, he’s probably that much better as a blocker.”

Ross last visited Alabama on Jan. 19-21 and where he talked with head coach Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Mike Locksley about his potential role in next years offense. Of the many topics discussed, one was the second half of this year’s national championship game where quarterback Tua Tagovailoa passed for 166 yards and three touchdowns while spreading the ball around to several receivers in Alabama’s 26-23 overtime comeback.

“Of course if you are a wide receiver and you’re considering Alabama you got a little bit excited by what you saw,” Dubose said. "The quarterback did an outstanding job of getting the ball to different guys and there were some guys making plays. At the same time if you are a receiver you see a lot of guys out there making plays. He looked at it I’m sure and watched it. I think Coach [Nick] Saban and Coach [Mike] Locksley discussed that during his visit up there. I’m not really sure what his feeling is to one school or the other because at the end of the day each school is going to spread the ball around.”

Alabama has signed the top player in the state the past fives seasons and will look to extend its streak by adding Ross on Wednesday. Although, the decision isn't a lock. Dubose said he has encouraged the prized recruit to tune out the hype surrounding his commitment and make a decision with his family on what he feels like will be the best opportunity for his future. Because of that, the head coach said he has no feel for what school is the favorite at this point.

Like the rest of the nation, he’ll be anxiously awaiting Wednesday to find out.

“I am really excited to see this guy get into a college football program and continue to grow and fine-tune his skill set,” Dubose said. “I think the sky is the limit. He’s an unbelievable talent, and he’s a very humble guy and a hard-working guy. It’s going to be a golden nugget for whoever gets him, and he’s going to be a winner for that program.”

We’re less than 24 hours away from National Signing Day, and there’s still a lot of uncertainty surrounding Alabama’s finish to its 2018 recruiting class.
What we do know is that the Crimson Tide can sign 23 players this cycle, according to a source close to the program, who confirmed that number on Sunday night. Alabama currently has 14 signees and four commitments. Before we get to the predictions on who we believe is going to fill the class, our educated guesses are based on 4-star linebacker commitments Vernon Jackson (Texas A&M) and Quay Walker (Georgia or Tennessee) flipping. If that happens, that would mean Alabama has seven spots to fill come Wednesday.
Here’s who we are projecting to fill Alabama’s signing class:
*indicates they have already signed
QB: None
Alabama will not sign a quarterback in the 2018 class. The Crimson Tide landed a commitment from a preferred walk-on from Braxton Barker, who is the son of former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker, on Monday night. Barker will not get an athletic scholarship and will not count against the team’s scholarship numbers in the 2018 class.

RB: Jerome Ford*
Jerome Ford signed with Alabama during the early signing period. The Tide will not sign another running back on Wednesday.

WR: Xavier Williams*, Slade Bolden*, Justyn Ross, Jaylen Waddle
Xavier Williams and Slade Bolden signed during the early signing period.
For several months, it seemed like the state of Alabama’s No. 1 prospect, Justyn Ross, was going to play his college football for Clemson. That has changed as we’ve gotten closer to Signing Day.

Alabama started to feel good about Ross a little over a month ago, even after his primary recruiter, defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley, left for the Oakland Raiders. Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley, who Ross already had a good relationship with, stepped in and took over the recruitment of the Under Armour All-American. We’ve also been told that Ross is impressed with new wide receivers coach Josh Gattis and his ability to develop top talent at Penn State.

Ross told SEC Country earlier this month at the Under Armour Game that his grandmother wants him to choose a school in Alabama, while his mother likes Clemson, but she’ll be fine with whichever school he chooses.

Jaylen Waddle was silently committed to Alabama for several months. When Texas A&M hired Jimbo Fisher, Waddle started leaning toward the Aggies. But in the past couple of weeks, Alabama sources have started to regain the confidence they had throughout the fall.

TE: Michael Parker, Glenn Beal
Michael Parker is expected to receive a blueshirt or greyshirt on Wednesday. He’s fine with whatever the plan is. He’s locked in with the Tide.
SEC Country received word on Sunday that Glenn Beal does, in fact, have a committable offer. Tennessee and Texas A&M are Alabama’s biggest competitors to land Beal. He was close to committing to the Aggies on several occasions, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him wind up at Texas A&M.

I do know that Saban is a big fan of Beal’s game. He views Beal as a jumbo athlete who could end up playing defense. We’ll see whether his official visit to Tuscaloosa last weekend is enough for him to end up at Alabama.

OL: Tommy Brown*, Emil Ekiyor*
Tommy Brown and Emil Ekiyor signed during the early signing period. Alabama is recruiting 5-star tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere and Penei Sewell, who will make their decisions on Wednesday. I don’t expect Alabama to land either prospect.

DL: Christian Barmore*, Stephon Wynn Jr.*, Bobby Brown, Malik Langham
Christian Barmore and Stephon Wynn signed during the early signing period.
Bobby Brown took an unofficial visit to Texas A&M this past weekend. I do not think he’ll flip to the Aggies. There’s definitely some cause for concern there because he was committed to Texas A&M and a lot of his friends are attending the school. But, in the end, I think he sticks with Alabama.

Malik Langham took an official visit to Auburn, his favorite school growing up, this past weekend. While that is a cause for concern, Alabama had a big lead over Auburn and Florida heading into his trip.

Alabama wants to add at least one more defensive lineman to its current group of signees in Christian Barmore and Stephon Wynn plus commitment Bobby Brown, who visited Texas A&M this past weekend but I expect him to stick with the Tide. Langham is the only uncommitted target that Alabama is still considering at this point.

Langham told SEC Country on Sunday why he would choose Alabama.

“Everything. You know, with Alabama, they’re a championship team,” Langham said. “[Defensive line] Coach [Karl] Dunbar and [co-defensive coordinator Tosh] Lupoi have a great relationship with me. Them just being close to home, in-state school, and it’s the focal point of college football.”
LB: Eyabi Anoma*, Jordan Davis*, Cameron Latu*, Jaylen Moody
Eyabi Anoma, Jordan Davis and Cameron Latu signed during the early signing period.

I expect current linebacker commitments Vernon Jackson (Texas A&M) and Quay Walker (Georgia or Tennessee) to flip on Wednesday.
Jaylen Moody received an offer from Alabama last week. As stated above, if Jackson and/or Walker end up flipping, then Moody is going to get the green light to commit.

Moody may only need one of them to leave this class because Glenn Beal isn’t a certainty to sign with the Tide.

DB: Jalyn Armour-Davis*, Josh Jobe*, Saivion Smith*, Eddie Smith, Patrick Surtain Jr.

Jayln Armour-Davis, Josh Jobe and Saivion Smith signed with Alabama during the early signing period.
Eddie Smith, the cousin of championship hero DeVonta Smith, was offered by Alabama earlier this month and immediately became a priority target for the Crimson Tide.

On his official visit a few weeks ago, Smith told SEC Country that he spent lots of time with Nick Saban, who told the recruit about the opportunity he would have if he chose the Tide. Smith said knowing that Saban would be coaching him gives Alabama an advantage over Mississippi State and Tennessee, which are his two other finalists.

Going into Wednesday’s decision, how would Smith classify Alabama’s chances of landing his signature?

“They have a great, great, great shot,” Smith said. “It’s going to be a tough decision. All I can do now is pray and talk to my family about it and trust God is going to guide me to the right school.

“Winning a national championship is every recruit’s dream. You go to Alabama and you’re going to have a great, great shot at it. Holding that crystal ball trophy is like a dream come true. I really want to win a championship when I’m in college. It’s a big goal of mine. I’m one step closer to my dream.”

This is another recruitment that could go either way come Wednesday. I do think that Patrick Surtain Jr.’s recruitment is going to come down to Alabama and LSU, despite him taking an official visit to Miami this past weekend.

Alabama has chipped away at LSU’s lead over the past several months. Several sources on Alabama’s side of things and sources in South Florida have felt like the Tide hold a slight edge now.

“I’ve been looking at it like they’re [Alabama] losing a lot of defensive backs, so there’s a high chance I can come in and compete and play as a freshman,” Surtain said earlier this month. “On the LSU side, they’re losing a lot of defensive backs, too, and I look at it like I have the chance to compete and play at a high level.”

It has to be noted that Surtain has strong family ties to Louisiana and has been to LSU frequently throughout his recruitment. It’s going to be a tough battle, but I think Saban beats out Ed Orgeron on the recruiting trail.

P: Skyler Delong*
Skyler Delong signed with Alabama during the early signing period.

Certainly hope so!

Was really hoping we could land either Petit-Frere or Sewell. I know it's not over yet, but I agree with @EasyTider on this one. And that's not really a bad thing.

Would be huge to get Ross combined with the young stud WRs we already have. Dude is huge. Clemson has had success with these tall WRs in the past, we need to have one of our own. He's just under Mike Evans size, bigger than Treadwell and Mike Williams (from Clemson last year) and likely faster than all.

Ross' potential is Julio Jones level but from what I've seen (in person) I still have a ton of questions about his effort. You knew the minute the ball was snapped if it was coming his way. If he wasn't getting the ball (or first option) he would literally jog and I never saw him throw a single block on running plays. He's an athletic freak of nature but if he thinks he's going to come to Bama and be allowed to BS around like that, it's going to be a rude awakening.

Call me whatever, but I'll consider this disappointing if we don't get Petite-Frere, Campbell, Taylor-Stewart, Walker, or Peterson (if he is even considering us). That technically means the last week we have lost focus with guys and most likely never had them at that time. If we lose on that many targets on top of the ones we lost during the early signing period I would have to consider that a bust somewhere. You don't win a National Championship and have open spaces to clearly offer a chance to play and miss out on so many guys. No, the sky is not falling, no glass half empty stuff, just stating it would be very unfortunate to not snag a few of these guys that we reportedly had fresh in our sights last week.

Then you may be slightly disappointed.

And a Top 3 class is disappointing?

RTR thanks again for your updates

I think @crimsoncorner is @TerryP 's alter ego or ghost write account. What do they call it, his pseudonym. He seems to have some good info on here and some connections in the know. Appreciate the info from both you guys. TerryP has a lot of respect and credibility around here. Look forward to holding you up there as well, Crimson. Hope your sources are reliable and accurate for this stuff.

What happened to the guy that joined and gave all the insider info before the playoffs? Telling us Mack, Lewis and Miller would be playing and such. Guy seemed to know his stuff and kept providing updates even though folks were blasting and mocking him. Haven't seen his posts since the NC game.

I hate to hear that. Disappointing. Guy has the tools and ability, a shame if he doesn't use it to its full potential. Looks like a beast. Julio was special, and gave a lot of effort all the time. Maybe this guy comes to the Capstone and gives it his all.
