2. He still needs to show he has some skills so he can get a paying job in the future. I can't blame him. If you were fired, would you explore working for the competition? You still need to put food on the table.

You have a misunderstanding of that position. You're right in the context of him not being on payroll from the athletic department. They do get compensated monetarily. Schools will often use camp proceeds to pay volunteer coaches.
