🏈 Mobility versus maneuverability.... The discussion of Mac Jones in the pocket.

The one thing I don't really find frustrating but oddly enough ignored is the way that Mac has been able to maneuver the pocket this year.

He's not scrambling like a dual threat quarterback. We don't see him throwing on the run that often.

But as a fan of mechanics I love the way he moves in the pocket and always has two feet on the ground when he passes.

As a side note, I'd call that coaching.

It's definitely in the coaching. QBs are taught to "feel the pressure, not see it", keep your eyes down field and not at the rush. When a QB lets his eyes see the rush, he's fooked!!! You'll see a lot of drills for QBs where they take their drop, climb up the pocket, slide left, slide right, and escape by spinning right or left. The entire time though, they are to keep their eyes down the field and throw to a target. Mac has great trust in his OL, in Dickerson making the proper call, inserting the RB into the blocking, etc.

That is something I have noticed a lot. He deftly makes these small adjustments to his position to basically step out of where someone is going. He seems to trust the line to do their job and adjusts his position to ensure they can keep moving the guy out of the way or to force the defender to go through a body to get to him. It isn't like other QB where he seems to always be turning and running to get out of the way, he just readjusts where he is smoothly usually.

His adjustments are extremely precise but also almost nonchalant He doesn’t waste motion and rarely do his mechanics seem to change

he reminds me of one guy out of 20 or so that I’ve taken firearms training from. Very precise and deadly but when his firearm is holstered and covered he appears to be a happy go lucky beatnik

Yes I love his mechanics, but wonder how much of that is how dominant our oLine is. He has forever to sit in the pocket in most games. My question on him and how good he may be would be how quickly does he make decisions when he doesn’t have such a good oLine ?

I will say this Mac has something specials, because he has done thing other bama QB hasn't.

I am not sure people are appreciating how good this OL has played this year. It has been machine like and working at a very high level whether it is pass protection or run game blocking. Closest we have had to this in Saban's time would be the 2012 group and I think this team is better and it is not close.
