Whewwwwww!! Dodged a big ol' greasy bullet didn't we? Think that they go after Miles?

With a 5-6 record, including six straight losses in Big Ten play, the very last thing Rich Rodriguez needs is yet another distraction in the week leading up to their rivalry game with Ohio State.

Unfortunately for Rodriguez, a distraction is exactly what he has on his hands. And one that could have major implications for himself and the program.

According to a report in the Detroit News, the football program failed to file the required logs used to keep track of how many hours players practice and work out. An internal audit revealed that the logs were missing.

According to an audit, obtained by The Detroit News, the football staff did not submit the practice logs for the 2008 season as required by the university athletic department, which uses the logs to remain in compliance with NCAA rules. The team filed its out-of-season reports after the audit was completed and, as of July, the football staff had still not filed its 2008 monthly logs.
The Detroit Free Press published a story in late August that quoted current and former players saying they were routinely required to exceed the NCAA's 20-hour limit on practice and exercise. Since those stories ran, the university hired an investigator, and the NCAA has been looking into claims that could result in major violations of rules if proven.

Called "countable athletically related activities" (CARA) reports, the logs help the university's compliance staff make sure players stay below the 20-hour limit and have the required number of days off as established by NCAA rules. The audit looked at six other sports at the university, including men's basketball and men's ice hockey, and raised no similar questions.

I'm very happy we have Saban, but still think RichRod is a quality coach. There is no way they can expect him to get it turned around in under two seasons with what he had there when he arrived. He is in the process of totalling revamping the program from an offensive standpoint. By year four they will be controlling the Big 11, if they give him a year four. He didnt just forget how to coach offense.

I don't see the old guard letting him stay to be honest.

*thankful Bama has Saban and not Rodriguez*

You are right. RR needs to cut bait and leave. They don't like him and are never going to accept him. He could go another place and probably be successful again......just another example that leaving for what looks to be bigger and better is not always the best decision.

I too think Rich Rod could right the ship if given time, but if Michigan does shift gears and boots him out the door, I think that will put them that much farther behind the 8 ball. Rich Rod's offense relies on special type players in order to run it and be effective. When Saban came to Alabama it was not a change in philosophy. Hence the 12-0 season in his second year.

If Michigan cuts bait at this point, they better hire someone from Utah, Miss St, or Florida that knows how to run the spread. Otherwise, you now have a bunch of undersized speedsters trying to take on big uglies and will not be able to run the ball down hill at all. Michigan better look out or they will be suffering through about 10 years of mediocrity with some years of hope sprinkled in to tease you. (sound familiar?)

IMO, since Michigan released this information this is the final blow to his coaching tenure up there. Wins and losses are one thing...NCAA violations gives them the right to fire him without paying the buyout.

So what could feasibily happen is that Notre Dame hires Myers and Michigan hires Miles in the same year...leaving Saban as king of the SEC...and giving Mid Western football some measure of credibility (at least untiil the following bowl season)? Heck, Ohio-Michigan and USC-Notre Dame could get interesting again. And, I'd suspect that ol' Les would make the Irish-Tide game happen...to test out his new toys against his old nemesis. What is not to like about all this?

I don't think Michigan wants Miles.

I think Rich Rod might make some school a good coach, but I think he's done for a while. I don't think any reputable school wants a coach that brings possible NCAA investigations along with him. No school wants that kind of baggage.
If he resigns, or gets fired, maybe he should take a couple years off until the heat dies down. Maybe then his name will once again be thrown out there for possible openings.

Back on the original topic, I think Michigan would do well to start talks with Meyer. They want a winning coach to develop a winning program, and Meyer certainly is that.
I think he would be a good fit there. The only problem I see for Meyer at Michigan is those coooolllllldddd winters!! Oh - and trying to get Tebow eligible to play at UM!!
Miles is still doing OK at LSU and he isn't going anywhere for a while. And who cares about ND anyway???

The whole coaching carosel might get interesting if ND and Michigan are looking at the same time. So, it's a race to see who fires first. If nobody makes a decision by December 15, I'd look for both coaches to SURVIVE until next season. You are talking about two proud programs who compete in every area, and then having to compete for a coach too? Crazy. If Urban Meyer wants to name his price, this is the time to do it. He's got Florida winning as much as any school can. He's got the NFL sniffing around (I'm reading that Cleveland is interested, he's from Ohio). This is a good time to be Urban Meyer.

I'm more concerned that someone is going to challenge us for Saban. You just can't have that many big time programs, with others looking as well such as Virginia, maybe Florida State re-thinking their strategy, and then the obvious if-one-guy-leaves-he-has-to-be-replaced Schools. I'm not casting doubt on Saban's committment to Bama. He's here, I'm nearly 100% sure. But the big boys that compete with us for tradition and demand for success are out there and looking.

To me, Les Miles only shot at coaching at one of those big schools is his past. Recent performance just doesn't stack up. While they did win the title 2 years ago, they haven't had less than 2 losses with all that talent since he got there.

This is my very first post on here. I have been reading posts on here for some time and I have to say this is the most informative bama site I have ever seen.

My thoughts on the ND , Mich et al coaching situations. Chip Kelly to ND, Miles or The guy at Northwestern (cant remember his name) to Mich and if it's Miles then Gary Patterson to LSU. Can,t see Patterson staying at TCU much longer with the record he has there.

Love the site !!!

i'd say chip

Harbaugh will be the next coach at Michigan. He is "close to finalizing" an extension at Stanford...you know what that means.

Harbaugh is from Toledo. He is a Michigan alumnus. He played 7 years with Chicago in the NFL.

You can bet your last dollar that phone calls have already been made.

As for Notre Dame, they will call Meyer first. Whether or not he takes the job is anyone's guess. If Alabama beats Florida in the SECCG, UF will be ending on a down note, and there will be less emotion for Meyer. I think a loss to Alabama and he moves to Notre Dame. If they beat us, he may do what Les Miles did and make a spur of the moment decision that is wrought from emotion. There is not another Tebow at Florida, and he has pulled that team's biscuits fro the fire a lot of times over the past 2 seasons. Without Tebow playing fullback at the QB spot, Florida is an 8 win team at best. Meyer's stock is high...if he EVER wants to coach his self-professed "dream job," he will take it this year.

My call right now is Harbaugh to UM, Meyer to ND.

Ok, lets say Meyer goes to ND (probably a smart move after we beat them in the SECCG) then who goes to Florida ? Maybe Butch Davis or Kelley from Cincy.
On another much smaller note anyone see Malzahn going to Memphis ?

Eddie Gran interviewed for the Memphis job yesterday.

I think if Meyer were to head to ND...then UF goes after Kelly from Cincy. IMO he would fall into place there at UF just like Meyer did and probably keep winning. Kelly has won with the second best players in Ohio. Imagine what he could do in the fertile grounds of Florida. I'm not saying dominate, but he could win and probably do so easily.

Harbaugh and the admin at UM have some differences. (they should go get him anyway)

Florida is an 8 win team at best without Tebow? yeah right:lance:

People seem to forget that Meyer has won (big) everywhere hes been. He also has won at UF with Leak running the show
