-A 17-3 run with 14:06to play helped the Alabamamen's basketball team build a double-digit lead and eventually finish off Texas A&M, 65-44, on Tuesdayevening in the Crimson Tide's Southeastern Conference opener. With the win, Alabama improves to 11-3 (1-0 SEC) on the year, including a perfect 10-0 mark inside Coleman Coliseum."Well it's a great way to start off SEC play," said UA Head Coach Anthony Grant. "I thought in the first half we struggled to score. We didn't shoot the ball well. I thought we settled a little bit, and I think it zapped our energy a little bit that the ball wasn't going in and give Texas A&M credit. They got out in transition and got some easy baskets on us and that's not characteristic of what we want to do. I think probably a little frustration set in. We had to regroup in the second half and you know our guys did a great job."
The Crimson Tide had four players score in double-digits and was led by junior guard Ricky Tarrant and his 15 points, while fellow junior guard Retin Obasohan contributed a season-high 12 points.
Senior guard Levi Randolph and sophomore forward Michael Kessens each added 10 points, with both tying for the team-high in rebounds at nine apiece. Kessens is now averaging 12.3 points and 9.6 rebounds over his last four games, including a pair of double-doubles.
Randolph extended his double-digit scoring streak to 16 games with his performance, and has scored in double-digits in each game during the 2014-15 season. The two teams played near even for the first half and part of the second, with Alabama holding a slight 36-33 advantage 14:06left in the game. However, the Crimson Tide went on a 17-3 run over the next 9:57to take a decisive 53-36 lead and maintain a double-digit margin for the rest of the game.
"I felt like our guys did a really good job in the second half of bringing the energy and the effort, and I thought from a defensive standpoint we were outstanding," Grant said. "Our defense was able to create offense for us and able to build the lead from there and take it home."
The Crimson Tide was dominant in the second half outscoring the Aggies, 38-20. Alabama limited A&M to just 23 percent (6-of-26) from the field in the second half, while the Tide made 52 percent (13-of-25) of their shots from the floor.
Alabama limited the Aggies to just 44 points, the lowest total by a Crimson Tide opponent this season and the lowest by an SEC foe since UA held Auburn to 43 on Feb. 26, 2013.Texas A&M was without leading scorer and rebounder Jalen Jones as he was out with an injury. The Aggies were led by guard Peyton Allen who came off of the bench and had 13 points.
Alabama will hit the road for its first SEC road contest of the year, traveling to Knoxville to take on Tennessee this Saturday, Jan. 10. The Crimson Tide and Volunteers will tip off at 1 p.m. CTon the SEC Network.
