šŸˆ Matthews booted by UGA; eyes Auburn, L'ville

Why wouldn't Richt suspend this guy indefinitely? Wouldn't that make it more difficult for someone like him just to summarily brush himself off and declare he wanted to go to the Barn or Louisville? I would have kept his sorry ass in limbo and not given him a release so easily.

I believe that's part of the whole Mark-Richt-is-just-a-good-guy schtik.

Georgia players James DeLoach and Jonathan Taylor face ''significant additional internal discipline'' but no suspensions after being accepted into a pre-trial intervention program Thursday for their March arrests for illegal check cashing.

DeLoach, Taylor, and two former Georgia players - safety Tray Matthews and wide receiver Uriah LeMay- appeared in Clarke County State Court on Thursday. Misdemeanor charges for the four will be dropped if they complete the program.

Matthews was dismissed from the team by coach Mark Richt on Tuesday. LeMay has left Georgia and plans to transfer.

The four were charged with receiving double payments for checks of $71.50 issued by the Georgia athletic department. They were arrested by University of Georgia police in March and charged with theft by deception.

Matthews, Taylor and DeLoach deposited the paper checks through a mobile device and also cashed the checks at a convenience store, according to University of Georgia Chief of Police Jimmy Williamson.

LeMay was charged with cashing a roommate's check which already had been deposited through a mobile device, according to Williamson.

The four were allowed to participate in spring football.

Matthews started six of the eight games he played as a freshman in 2013. He had 23 solo tackles and missed five games with a hamstring injury.

Matthews' Twitter account said he plans to transfer to Auburn or Louisville. Former Georgia defensive coordinator Todd Grantham now heads Louisville's defense.

Two former Georgia defensive players - safety Josh Harvey-Clemons and cornerback Shaq Wiggins - already have transferred to Louisville. Harvey-Clemons was dismissed following last season after multiple suspensions.

In announcing the dismissal of Matthews on Tuesday, Richt said ''We are trying to make room for guys who want to do things right.''

According to Thursday's statement released by Georgia, DeLoach and Taylor ''have and will face significant additional internal discipline from both the UGA athletic association and the football program.''

AUBURN, Alabama -- Gus Malzahn isn't shy about giving players a second chance.
Former Georgia safety Tray Matthews announced his intention to transfer to Auburn on Saturday, making Matthews the second major SEC transfer of this offseason to land on the Plains.

I'm truly blessed for this opportunity and second chance that God and Coach Gus has blessed me with. I'm excited and ready to Excel at AU

Matthews, who was dismissed by Georgia coach Mark Richt after a classroom incident earlier this month, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Athens Banner-Herald, took only 11 days to commit to Auburn, a finalist for the former five-star recruit when he initially chose Georgia.
He will have to sit out a year after transferring before being eligible to play in 2015. Matthews started six games at Georgia as a true freshman and made 36 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.
Matthews also started against Auburn and made 12 tackles. The free safety was in coverage against Ricardo Louis on the Prayer at Jordan-Hare when Josh Harvey-Clemons tipped the ball into the air.

Matthews was arrested in March with three other teammates on misdemeanor charges of theft by deception for cashing scholarship checks twice.
The four Georgia players received a pre-trial intervention last Thursday, meaning the charges will be dropped if they meet their terms.
The circumstances of Matthews' arrival differ from those of former Ole Miss tackle Austin Golson, a Prattville native who transferred to Auburn earlier this season to be closer to his sick grandparents.
But Malzahn hasn't been shy about offering players – both his own and other teams' – second chances.
Quarterback Nick Marshall has thrived at Auburn after being dismissed by Georgia and spending a year at the junior college level. Malzahn also brought back former H-back Ricky Parks on a walk-on, probationary basis, then let Parks go again this spring.
At least one of Matthews' new teammates has already welcomed him with open arms.
