With
Lane Kiffin all but on his way to Oxford
to become the next head coach of Ole Miss, a former coach of the Rebels and current coach of a team likely on its way to the College Football Playoff reportedly advised him against taking the job.
According to Parish Alford ot the Daily Journal
, Ed Orgeron advised Kiffin, his close friend, against leaving FAU for Ole Miss. Both are close from their days on USCās staff under
Pete Carroll from 2001-2004.
Alford writes:
āDaily Journal sources said Orgeron told Kiffin a certain "fit" was required to coach at Ole Miss, and he didn't think his long-time friend had that fit.ā
In three seasons as head coach at Ole Miss from 2005-2007, Orgeron went 10-25, including a 3-21 mark in SEC play.
Kiffin will take over for
Matt Luke, who Ole Miss athletic director
Keith Carter fired last weekend after going 15-21 over three seasons, including a 6-18 record in SEC play.
Kiffin has been a head coach four times in his career. The first time was in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders (2007-08). The Raiders fired Kiffin, and the coach then took over the Tennessee Volunteers program. He would spend just one season with the Volunteers, unceremoniously departing for the USC Trojans coaching job. Kiffin spent three seasons and five games at USC (2010-13) before he was fired by the program. That led to Alabama coach
Nick Saban hiring Kiffin as the team's offensive coordinator.
Kiffin left Alabama for the Florida Atlantic job prior to the 2017 season. Through three seasons, the coach has a 25ā13 record at Florida Atlantic, including two appearances in the Conference USA Championship game. The Owls demolished UAB in the conference title game today.
"I'm really happy here, Paul, and all coaches say that, but you know I'm not one to just give coach speak,"
Kiffin told Paul Finebaum during an interview in October.. "As you get older, I think you value different things. And so when you're younger, a lot of times you're chasing money and titles ā how big is the job? ā and all those things.
"So I'm very happy here. I think we've gotten something pretty neat going on here with ... 24 wins or something like that in three seasons and they had (three) three-win seasons before (from 2014-16).
"So a lot of really good young players, so I'm very happy here and it's a great place to live. As you get older, you kind of appreciate where you live, too."
Kiffin can say he was happy in Boca Raton, and who wouldnāt be, but by leaving for Ole Miss, he gets another shot to coach in what many consider the premier conference in college football.
