Guy Bailey became the fifteenth president of Texas Tech University on August 1, 2008. Although in his first semester as president, Dr. Bailey has set an ambitious agenda for growth in both student enrollment and research productivity. He is busy in his first months at Texas Tech meeting students and faculty on campus and interacting with the South Plains community and alumni across the state.
Bailey came to Texas Tech from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where he served as chancellor from January 2006 until July 2008. The chancellor is equivalent to president at Texas universities. He previously served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the University of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) from 1999 through 2005.
ā€œTexas Tech University is a unique and special place,ā€ Bailey said. ā€œIt has one of the brightest futures in American higher education. I am honored to be president and consider it a privilege to be a part of that future.ā€
Bailey counts among his major accomplishments at UMKC the completion of a $200 million capital campaign. He also created $10 million in administrative savings that was put into the core academic mission of the university, including, raising salaries to attract and retain faculty. During his tenure about $175 million in new construction was approved using primarily public/private funding partnerships.
While In Kansas City, Bailey was active in economic development partnerships in the community, serving on the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City.
Bailey holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English from the University of Alabama and a doctorate in English linguistics from the University of Tennessee. He is the author of about 100 books and articles, many co-authored by his wife Dr. Jan Tillery, Texas Tech class of 1974. President Bailey's wife is a proud Red Raider, as were her mother, Mary Elizabeth Tillery, class of 1948, and her father Clarence "Tim" Tillery, outstanding offensive end for the Red Raider football team from 1938-1941.
Bailey continues to do research on language variation and change, with special emphasis on the English of Texas and the American South, and in computational linguistics. The research on Texas English has been featured on National Public Radio, CNN Headline News, BBC Radio, and in the New York Times, Texas Monthly and the San Antonio Express News. Since 1984 he has brought almost a million dollars in external funding for his research.
 
I've been hearing than Houston Nutt and Lane Kiffin are in the mix as well. Nutt I can see. But, Kiffin? Seriously? Is a single 7-6 season really all that impressive to the folks at TT?

That and going from one loudmouthed nut, to another one isn't the best scenario either.
