šŸˆ Kendall Sheffield; MIA

The lesson here is that when you think you're really deep in a position, think again. I remember thinking how stacked we were at the DB position earlier this year. I failed to consider that some of these guys weren't going to like getting passed over, especially when they were getting praise the previous year.
It's a bodies versus experience thing again—and no as deep as the '15 team when you think about the entire unit. There will be a true frosh running with the two's ... a guy we'll very likely see getting picked on this season.

Agreed. That may be the bad news, but good news is that Avarett will get great experience for his senior year, and the freshman will be much more ready in their second season. Almost all of our guys have shown awesome improvement from year 1 in the rotation to year 2.

Guys I just can't help it. I mean, I wish him well. But man, WHO is this guy listening to???!!! I mean, did he think he was going to beat out Humphrey? Or beat out Minkah? Did he not have the guts to keep competing with Averett? Saban said 'Reps, reps, reps." What was he saying? Sounded like he was saying that Sheffield has the ability, the skill, but needs more coaching, needs to be more instinctive. He's trying to beat out a guy that's been here 3 years. I would hope he'd have more mettle than this. He'll sit out a year, so he'll be a redshirt sophomore somewhere else after a year on the bench at UA, and a year in JUCO. OR he could have been a STARTER as a sophomore at UA??!!! And a valuable back up or maybe a starter at some point this year??

As to how these guys are gelling with the new coaches, that's an interesting point. Certainly Pruitt is a different animal than Smart. I think that Pruitt brings some of his own attitude and ideas, and whether or not he comes across as an asshole, I like what I see from Pruitt. Would be VERY interesting to hear what the guys say about the difference between Mel Tucker and Derrick Ansley. Any coach has to be evaluated as a recruiter, but ultimately, can they coach you? Can they make you better? Would love to hear the perspective on each from the players.

Bottom line - this is being done Saban's way, for better or worse for Kendall, for Burgess-Becker, for Mo Smith. And I'm with Saban all the way.

Roll Tide!

Anyone ever thought there could be some paradise by dashboard light going on? "Baby, don't go. Stay here and play juco." I mean, we're talking the cradle of civilization. Sometimes that's more persuasive than we give credit.

One of the (few) problems that come from signing #1 class nearly every year is that 4-5 star kids have to deal with humility for the first time in their athletic careers. Not a bad problem to have, but seems to be more than just an anomaly now with CNS and the dynasty he has built. By now, you'd think these kids would understand what it takes to play for Alabama. There is a fine line between confidence and cockiness. That line is more often drawn with hard work & patience which surprisingly enough some of these elite HIGH SCHOOL athletes have not truly experienced what that entails.

I'm of the opinion that I'd rather play at Alabama this year and pretty much handed the job next year, over going to JUCO essentially wasting a year anyways and transfering elsewhere. I simply feel very few schools can offer what we offer. Ohio State, maybe USC, maybe Notre Dame, when looking at academics, facilities, and championship opportunities. If it's to be near family, I respect that.

When talking about Daylon Charlot a few days back Saban spoke about players panicking about their playing time and it makes a lot of sense. At what point do these guys give up on themselves? They see the competition. Sheffield saw the young warriors coming after what he wants. Mental toughness and supreme confidence in your own ability would seem to be the greatest gift they could possess. Unfortunately, much like speed, that self-assuredness is more a product of what's in each one's DNA.

Talked with a buddy about this yesterday. As a parent, what kind of input do you provide in this situation? Do you muddy the water with bad advice or provide them good advice? Once they've made the decision, do you stand by them and let them own the outcome? I'll never be faced with the same situation, neither of my kids are athletes, so I can't imagine the pressures they have on them, either self imposed or by others.

Is Kendall learning that when things aren't going the way you want you change landscapes? I don't think this is a bad thing necessarily, happens all the time in the real world. Would he learn more from it if he stuck it out and worked that much harder to attain his goal? In the end, he owns this journey and he'll take good and bad things from his decisions.

Good luck to Kendall, I hope this young man finds his way and it's too bad it wasn't at Alabama.

There are so many Bear Bryant quotes that apply to this situation, saw a portion of this the other day on twitter and it seemed fitting to post.

If a man is a quitter, I’d rather find out in practice than in a game. I ask for all a player has so I’ll know later what I can expect.

Coming to a place like UA can be overwhelming and often is for these kids. I can recall coming to UA as an invited walk on in 1989 and being taken aback by the amount of talent that was on the field. I felt pretty good about myself coming out of HS. I had several offers before getting hurt; Illinois, Vandy, Miss State, Southern Miss, Army, but turned those down to pursue my dream school. I hung around for 2 years, but paying for your own way and struggling in the classroom, I chose to give up football and focus on education.
Some of these kids simply can't deal with any adversity because they have been spoon fed coming through the HS ranks. You go from a big fish in a small pond, to being just another fish in the ocean. To these kids that transfer, good luck. Hopefully, you will develop some patience at your next stop and not be afraid of a little competition. To the meddling coaches that call parents and put a bug in their ear about transferring, I hope your stint is a dumpster fire!!!
