It's not really a huge secret that Justin Thomas gift-wrapped the final round of the 2019 Genesis Open to J.B. Holmes. I've seen 3-year-old birthday parties with less wrapping paper and fewer bows than Thomas pulled out of his Titleist golf bag on Sunday afternoon at Riviera when he submitted a 4-over 75 and lost by one to the brawny Holmes.
There's not really any other way to say it. When you take 34 putts in a single round with 19 of them on the final nine holes (including two three-putts and a four-putt), you gave the tournament away. Consider this: Holmes hit seven of nine greens in regulation on the final nine holes while Thomas hit eight. Holmes' average proximity to the hole was 1 foot closer than Thomas' on the back, but his score was two strokes better.

I saw a note the other day about how many rounds JT had played without a three putt. Then, having two along with a quad this weekend...'twas an anomaly. I thought Holmes was done when he plugged his ball coming out of the bunker. But damn...JT yipped it away. His putts were burning the edges...just not getting the roll he normally gets.

His biggest mistake, once the deed was made public, was the total indifference he expressed publicly. 3 times he tried to justify why multimillionaires could care less about the little people, like your caddie. By the way, caddie and little people never go over well on the PGA tour. When public opinion, through bad press, went viral and the Kooooos were turning into booooos and catcalls during before and after swings during the tourney this weekend, then and only then did he seem to find his religion.

There is no agreement, per se. It's a standard, much like tipping your waitress, that varies from caddie to caddie, golfer to golfer. Most of the time they're looking at 8% of winnings, 10% of total. Most of the time (according to the APTC.) Matt said he told the guy if he made it to Sunday he'd get five grand, didn't he?

The fact that he's already sent his caddie 3 different payments over a period of a month on three different occasions, clearly indicates no one is more mixed up with how much you pay your caddie than Matt Kuchar. Especially the agreed upon price between them which he well knew wasn't the going rate for his winnings.

8% or 10% was a long way from 5 thousand dollars when his personal winnings were 1.3 million. Thus the controversy. When the public got a hold of this mess he only made it worse by trying to justify his stinginess. "I'm guessing he's never made more than $200 bucks in a week." That's the part where I openly wonder how his trip to Mexico will go today. Suddenly Mr. Sportsmanship and the people's champ was coming off like King of the Slumlords. Finally after much heckling and popping off he found his way to top out at $50,000. So, don't ask me what a caddie should get, Kuchar has been on tour for almost 20 years and he's still struggling with the concept.

The Patrick Reed comment was a little more about not giving in to all the social media warriors out there that seem to think they know more than those involved. I just don't think he would have cared what folks thought and would not have given in like Kuchar did. I know I wouldn't have after making a deal. Of course I am a giving person, so I probably would have given him $10,000 or $15,000 out of sheer happiness of winning, so there is that too. And so everything is clear, Kuchar didn't stiff his caddie, he gave him $5,000 which was agreed upon. Stiffing would imply $0.
