I think it was Newsweek that coined the term "evangelical" when they claimed 1976 as the year of the evangelical. Carter's affability for human rights, peace, and protect the poor brought a lot of that group over to the democratic side. He introduced the idea of being a "Progressive Evangelical." It didn't sit well with a lot of that group who were supporting him in his original run for POTUS.

I look at the movement in the same light as I do the Christian Coalition. It's the same core group that's just evolved.

We Christians should do our best to be the hands and feet of Christ. Jimmy Carter did. After his disastrous time in office, he didn't bury his head and hide away. He let us all have a good laugh at him in The Jeffersons help so many who needed it, even as late as last year. His legacy with Habitat for Humanity is something else.

Their objective was to forge a new GOP constituency out of the failures of the Democratic Party, now seen as the vandguard of the stale federal bureaucracy, as well as tap into the wave of evangelical Christianity sweeping the Western world, thanks largely to TV evangelists and networks. Enter Ralph Reed’s Christian Coalition, Falwell’s Moral Majority, Pat Robertson’s CBN network, Oral Roberts and the TBN network. Concurrently the radical Likud Party was formed in Israel in 1973 and began exploiting the fraudulent Scofield theology espoused by all these outlets to manipulate the masses of evangelicals in powerful western nations into supporting the Likud vision of an expansionist Greater Israel project. So the Reagan Revolution was largely the work of these Neoconservative academics and strategists to fuse US Middle East policy with the goals of Likud extremists in Israel, which would be later outlined in their infamous policy paper A Clean Break. This is no doubt one reason why Carter worked hard in retirement to advocate on behalf of Palestinians for peace and speak out against Israeli apartheid and particularly against Bibi’s recklessness and extremism as Prime Minister.

The state of affairs are as such: When you lead a response with "documented by journalists and historians" all the content that follows is immediately questionable.

Journalists, as one small sect, have had no and still are clueless when it comes to the beliefs and principles of the Christian Coalition, the Moral Majority, etc. No matter if it is a journalist, or a historian, or just an average "Joe" like me and you. If people choose to scoff and ridicule, publicly, the principles and beliefs of others those same people are in no means credible when it comes to explaining those same beliefs they mock.

Wait a minute.

The Iran situation, which included the hostage situation, is to blame for the energy crisis because of their reductions in productions: which wasn't dramatic, but its effect sure was.

What I find ironic is looking back at Carter and his attempts at negotiating the Iran leadership (Ayatollah) to separate their dealing with factions with communist origins. In other words it was "Russia, Russia, Russia" almost half of a century ago.

He continued Nixon's price controls, and did start the defense increases that accelerated under Reagan. His initial steps to deregulate some industries bore fruit later on.

Funding bin Laden, funny you bring that up. I just ordered Crile's Charlie Wilson's War, which is far more scholarly than the movie that followed.
