Where are the passing lanes?

@TerryP I am a big Jalen fan and he is a winner and nothing but a class kid. I am curious however why you think he shouldn't throw the ball over the top into the end zone since there is no safety in the middle or at least I did not see one? Not saying put a lot of air on the ball but enough to get it over the LB. To me he could which would be the answer to your passing lane question.
Because it's a 15 yard throw he's going to have to loop over the linebackers. There is no window there. You've got a SAM sitting there spying on Jalen and the left corner, in coverage, crossing the route Calvin is running.

What's crazy here is @TUSKtimes and @Tidestalker refuse to read this in its entirety.

There were no open passing lanes.
It was a good decision not to throw then.
It was a better decision to wait for Calvin to cross while allowing the LCB take himself out of the play.
And in the end...

Jalen scrambling brings the SAM up opening the back corner even more giving an easier pass. This "pitch and catch" thing through that window? That's the stuff dreams are made of with only a few having that capability.

This is what I consider to be yet another play where it's not being looked at fairly, or in its context.

The story continues to change with Jalen and how he's represented. In this thread we have people criticizing his completions his frosh year calling them handoffs, and then another praise his passing and excuse the turnovers. Have some forgotten the offensive system Saban runs?

I get that some people are fans of one and not the other. There's nothing about what Tua may bring to the field I don't hold a lot of excitement for. I tire, quickly, of Jalen's play being rewritten--in some cases pure works of fiction--just to support ones choice for who they think should be taking the snaps. On the other hand I'm consistently amused by how often some people's criticism changes. I'm amused how some things are just made up.

The degree of irony found with a lot doesn't surprise me. The very arguments against Jalen--ones they fought tooth and nail--are the very same arguments used to criticize him now. What you're reading here reads just like those who were cautious about him taking the reigns two years ago. Often heard were cries of "Kiffin isn't a QB coach," or "give him time to mature." Yet, all of those cries are where today? Answer: quickly, and as quietly blanketed as they can manage.

The one continuing theme of this off-season from a few here remains the same: Don't write him off.

Damn.

That's an antagonistic opinion. <img alt="" src="https://ih0.redbubble.net/image.567420689.0744/pp,650x642-pad,750x1000,f8f8f8.u2.jpg" style="width: 75px; height: 100px;" />

You seem to take the #2 vs #13 personal. #2 is maxed out as a QB. Hell his two games vs Auburn were pathetic at best and he Bama won one of those. #2 is a wildcat QB that plays most every snap.

No, Terry... I hear ya. Loud and clear. You're saying there's no "open lane". Who needs a lane when the entire backside of the field is wide open and the receiver has split the 2 defenders by 15 yards? Do you need a lane throw it over someone?

Watch the youtube clip man... It's very apparent why the play was called against that coverage, why he was wide open, and that Jalen is terribly slow and anticipating how open Ridley was/is going to be.

When analyst and experts talk about a QB throwing into a tight window, they are referring to throwing to a reciever that is tightly covered and the ball is placed by the QB in the only spot that his reciever can make the catch. That is throwing into a window. There was no tight coverage on Ridley that I could see. Ridley made a fake to the left to get the corner to bite and then made his move to the right and looked back at Jalen looking for the ball. Ideally, Jalen should have been letting the ball go when Ridley looked back. Window? Passing Lane? Jalen had a whole house to throw into. Pattern smattern. Ridley was wide open in the end zone. Hit the man with the ball. That should be a simple throw for most any second year QB.

We have ALWAYS seen the No. 2 Alabama QB be more popular than the starter within a certain section of fans but I don't think I've ever in my life seen anything quite like we're seeing in regards to Jalen-Tua. The way certain people talk about Jalen Hurts, you would think his starting record is closer to 2-20 than 20-2. I'm done with this argument, personally. Let the best man win.

You seem to take the #2 vs #13 personal. #2 is maxed out as a QB.
I don't see this as he does...
I'm done with this argument, personally.
...not argument. Not personal, either. Fascinating with no doubt.

You say "#2 is maxed at as QB" when Saban says "Jalen is improving."

I do take things literally and disagree with your statement. If Saban is saying he's improving, we've seen improvement, others have commented he's improving, it leads me to say don't write off Jalen.

I don't need to. Where's the left corner? Crossing the pattern. Who needs a window? He's lofting the ball to hit that area or it's a jump and toss. Either way, it's a floater. As soon as that decision is made two are coming in on the play, the aforementioned LCB and the SAM along with one of their safeties.

Watch the SAM and safety--both are retreating on the play until Jalen starts to scramble. I see that. Jalen evidently saw that. Have you watched the other personnel? Evidently no because you're not considering them. Seriously. It's almost as if you think Dorian O'Daniel is another Vinnie Sunseri in pass coverage. He's far, far from...

Notice, he (CR) isn't even in his cut yet.

This wide open notion falls apart when you're looking at the entire field and watching what the others are doing.

Something tells me Jalen has watched enough film on Clemson that he knew where those guys were likely headed. He's always been a film room guy. But that's just speculation.

You can trivialize people's impression of the 2 QBs all you want but I've heard many specific reasons here that fans feel very convicted about their choice. I don't believe this thread has much to do with the fact that one of them has been sitting on the bench.

In that you don't sound like you want to fight fire with fire in rebuttal, simply waiting on coach Saban's choice may be the smartest thing to do.

What?

"Saban said #2 was improving".....that is great.

Nick Saban standing behing #2 during spring drills 2016....make your reads and stop running the ball
Nick Saban standing behind #2 during spring drills 2018....even the 3rd team QB can move the team down the field.

Dusty Springfield....Wishin and Hopin

Where the hell did I say Jalen is "maxed out at QB"?
there was supposed to be two quotes from two people within that nested quote. I missed @JoseyWalesTheOutlaw somehow.

This comment is what I was replying to:

This is precisely what I caution following.

One, who's to say this is the style of coaching where Jalen has been progressing? Perhaps, it's this kind of "demand" that's enabled improvement. Two, it's A-day.
Three, it was heard because ESPN wanted it to be heard. There's nothing that gives any indication that's not the same style of coaching every quarterback under Saban receives. You just happened to be one of the first few that heard the interaction.

Your's is a pretty concrete statement--one in which I think there should be a degree of caution.

Would you not agree we've seen plenty rash, irrational, and misleading statements, articles, and opinions on this whole story?

Try your best to put your bias aside, and watch both of these highlight reels one after the other.

The fact that you can claim that others have "bias" and you don't is so freaking ironic that it's not even funny anymore.

I don't have a favorite. In fact I wish Hurts was better than Tua. We likely would have won a title his first year.

Fact is he is nowhere near Tua.

That's not a bias it's a fact.

What's funny is your inability to process what you see with your own eyes.
