🏈 It's Time To Sink or Swim With Coker

The sack that everyone seems to be sticking on was the chip by Henry. The problem rests at the feet of the lineman Henry was to help. The guy beat the lineman and then Henry's chip more or less aided the defender getting in for the sack. Pocket awareness and the internal clock in Coker's head are two things he must work on to improve. It all comes with live reps. The other sack was poor pocket awareness completely.

Overall I agree, I thought DH did a great job of blocking. In the play I was discussing the lineman didn't get a good chip and then DH's chip was ineffective IMO. Coker could have moved quicker and dumped the ball also. I also saw in the 2nd half a very similar play and DH held the block much longer and effectively.

Coker is the starting QB for The University of Alabama. His every move will be dissected ad nauseam I just don't want to knock him any harder than he deserves

The other block by Henry was quite different - Henry picked up a free blitzer, which is his first read there. The play you cite was a rusher beating the LT z and Henry was secondary help before he can release to a check down option.

The fact remains that if you watch the play the chip by DH did not aid Coker in any way. Yes the lineman whiffed and no Henry didn't have primary responsibility but it was not the "slow motion sack" that I have seen it called and as the one other sack most certainly was.

i am not impugning on DH's talent, effort etc. Henry was the best player on the field for either team Saturday night by a long shot. I just felt that his "chip block" was lacking.

Surely if we can critique a first year first game starting QB, we can also critique a 3 year running back who is being mentioned prominently for Heisman

I can't believe how delusional people are. Coker is the best QB talent we've had since I can ever remember. He needs REPS. Things like losing major yardage on sacks is due to lack of game experience.
He made some throws against Wisconsin that were throws I've never seen made by an Alabama QB. The dude has NFL written all over him. I think all he needs is for the coaching staff to name him the starter (vote of confidence), and more live experience. If he plays 80% of the next three games, I think he might look like the best QB in the conference

Is your name Dawson? Lawd.

Um, I'm gonna hold off on the love to that degree. Serviceable QB with some issues that need work is where I would be at the moment. he absolutely needs to work on quick consistent release. He had a pass in the first half that highlighted the fact that he can get the ball out quickly but overall that has to improve. Another area he has to improve is play action sequences. He seems very methodical and not smooth at all to me on PA fakes. A couple of times it looked to me like the RB had to hesitate and wait an extra beat for Coker to go through his motion on the fake.

I do not know if the WR screen will even be an option for him against SEC defenses as I feel like they will jump the route and disaster will occur. I would rather see the toss sweep to Henry in lieu of a slow developing WR screen.

It didn't help Coker because Coker moved within the pocket opposite of what he should've based on the defender's rush, so he moved himself into the sack. It's a lack of pocket awareness that concerns me. Blocking will occasionally break down. The QB has to help out the blockers by moving effectively within the pocket.

I think this goes to the root of one of the issues I see with Coker. In another post I said his movement on PA fakes seems methodical and not fluid. Same thing to a degree with his step drops and movement in the pocket. It is almost like watching someone who is learning to dance by following numbered steps on the floor as opposed to just allowing the music to dictate their rhythm. On a few plays he seemed to give himself over to the flow of the offense but others he seemed to try and make the flow or rhythm fit a memorized sequence. None of that may make sense to anyone but me. lol

LOL.

If Coker holds on and remains the starter, I have no doubt he can be effective. But, pump the brakes. You've seen absolutely nothing to put him ahead of a long list of good QB's at Bama, yet.
In terms of talent and potential I'd put him ahead of Croyle, JPW, McElroy, and McCarron.
McCarron might've had more intangible ability, but time will tell.
If he can put it all together, I think NFL teams will be all over him.

All because he can throw the ball far.

The guy could end up being the greatest QB to ever play the game. But, we've seen very little from him. And so far, I haven't seen him do better than any of the QB's you listed. Having a strong arm is great, but it's far from the most important aspect of being a good QB.

"If" all you say is true, why hasn't it happened yet? Name a former 5th year senior QB who all of a sudden had the light just click on, and became a star in college and went on to start in the NFL? "If" JC was all that great, he would have won the job over JW at FSU. Or he would have won the job last year. And don't give me Blake Sims as an example of what I asked earlier. Sims bounced around between positions his entire career here, and was recruited as an athlete. If I recall accurately, his first practice at Alabama he was a DB.

Did you notice the "strong-armed" Jake Coker underthrew all three of the deep balls Saturday night? Please, check back with us in mid-October on this topic. Josh Rosen for UCLA is a guy
who "gets" the QB position.

I know, why don't we compare the way Coker looks after starting one game to the way AJ looked after starting three years. Man, that would be fun.

Of course Coker will look terrible compared to the way all the other quarterbacks looked after starting complete seasons. You really think Coker won't improve any this year? What we see now is what we get?

None of us know. Pull for the guy to do well.

Jameis Winston won the Heisman, but if Coker was all that great he would have won the starting job. You do realize how ridiculous that sounds, right?

I agree with this. I think he will improve and I'M PULLING FOR HIM TO IMPROVE!!! LOL! He's got NFL physical talent. However, I'm convinced that Jimbo overstated how good Coker was and overly exaggerated how close the competition was at FSU between he and Winston. I honestly do. But that is neither here nor there now. He's our qb, I was pleasantly surprised Saturday and am hoping he progresses into a championship caliber quarterback.
