🏈 It looks like there is going to be a group that puts Kareem Jackson in ...

...the recently vacated role we saw Anthony Madison spend time in a few years ago.

Don't get this wrong. I wasn't impressed with the play of our defensive backs yesterday. And, if you watch the Saban press conference I think you'll see he was too happy with the play of our defense as a whole, except for a few exceptions.

But, back to the subject at hand.

I vividly remember people being on the "bash Ant" band wagon. Now, based on what I saw begin to surface last season and I'm seeing again after A-day it appears there is a swelling group chasing the wagon hoping to get a seat.

Two thoughts, both on what we saw yesterday.

One, on Julio's long TD reception - sure, it was a guy that Kareem had cover duties on and he was beaten. However, there's more to the story than meets the eye.

I suspect we are going to see Robby Green make mistakes this fall - much like he did yesterday when he bit on the play action fake and didn't maintain his "over the top" coverage that allowed Julio to get so open.

It's a team game, remember?

Two, on McCoy's TD. Sure, Kareem was caught with his back to the QB and didn't see the pass.

However, I looked at that play again this morning and wonder if there could have been a better thrown pass than the one Greg threw on that play.

It'll take A LOT of convincing to make me think that Kareem's head was fully into what was going on yesterday at the practice.

That said, I see the position of having a seat on the band wagon as one that is full of splinters.

Sort of funny to me looking at what Madison has done with is career considering how many people wanted him off the field when he was wearing Crimson. Are we about to see a repeat with KJ?

One thing that has bothered me for a while now, and I've voiced it; the propensity for our DB's to get caught with their backs to the QB on passes. Obviously sometimes this happens because of the route called. A lot of teams have gone to that stop-fade, where the ball is intentionally under-thrown and behind the DB, allowing the WR to make a play on the ball while the defender has his back turned.

Okay, I'm not talking about those routes. I'm talking about the longer fly and go routes where our defensive backs routinely thrown their hands up in the receiver's face, instead of trying to make a play on the ball. Sometimes it looks like our defensive backs are just plain beat, so that is their only option. Other times though, it looks like a technique that is taught. That bothers me. I saw this a lot under Shula's staff, and it concerns me more that it has continued to happen under the current staff. You cannot effectively defend a pass or make a play on the ball with your back turned to the ball.

But I'm going to take a step back here, and go all "TerryP" here. :wife:
It is a team game, and considering that effective pass defense combines coverage, along with pass rush, how much of this has been due to our inability to pressure the QB?

What do you guys think?

I've felt that way about our secondary for a while. It's extremely difficult to continuosly cover a receiver when the quarterback has seemingly all day to make the throw. Last year, we saw Utah and Florida rip us to shreds simply because we could not pressure the quarterback. Our 4-man rush needs to be able to provide some pressure to the quarterback.

As a former Madison hater, I will say that I love Kareem. He's the best corner on our team and comparing him to Madison is simply insulting (I know you weren't doing this Terry). I honestly don't know why people are starting to think he sucks. He played poorly in the bowl game, but I've seen people even get on him for the SECCG. Tim Tebow is the fing man, he put that pass to Carl Moore on the money, nothing Kareem could do. Also, there's not a college CB in the country that can guard Julio. Kareem is the best corner on our team and a legit pro prospect, one of my favorite players on the team too.

I dont understand how so many people can dog a guy after watching the game on TV.

People, you cant even see what he is doing on 98% of the plays.

It's the 2% they noticed.

FWIW, if you happened to notice, it started on this very forum before A-day. And, I noticed it starting last year during the season.

It's a pot I thought deserved to be stirred.

Did you know that Madison was the guy who led the team in PBU's his last season (and I think his Jr. season as well?)

There is always a player the is selected to be the e-scape goat. Weve had Madison, JPW, Ramzee Robinson for a while, etc.

If you notice a trend almost all of them do better than what the fans think they are going to do.

Kareem is a good CB. He's had no help the last couple of years since there has not been a pass rush. IO expect him to do quite well this year.

Terry were you incognito and sitting around me yesterday???

There were 2 guys that would not shut up about Jackson. They sounded just like the Madison deter's that you were speaking of.

I just found this thread ironic after having listened to these guys go on for 3 quarters about him.

It's just a sad statement you can see, and foretell, the reactions of a lot of Bama fans. I'm certainly not trying to be egotistical here, but I could see this coming from a mile away.

I thought Madison struggled when he was younger but bounced back and had a great senior season. If I were going to pick on one of our current DBs it would not be KJ. There is one that comes to mind, but I won't elaborate.

Your always going to have your negative group of fans, but I don't know why they would go after Jackson. He along with Arenas will be our leaders next season in the secondary, and some act like they're not aware of that. Every player is capable of making a couple of bad plays and sometimes the Corner position is magnified a little more then others. IMO, it's one of the most difficult positions on the field, besides QB.

:a: I don't think its fare to call a fan that has a legit concern for a position a negative fan. Where theres smoke there is fire. If Kareem had played better in the sugar bowl (piss poor tackling and shady coverage) he might not be getting so much attention. As for the pass to Julio where coverage was blown was not my concern. It was the lack of effort after the catch on Kareems part. I know its just a spring game. I will say this though he layed the wood to the TE.

I was watching the game on ESPN and on ESPN360 (a little behind so I could see the instant replay) and that one did ring Peek's bell.

But, Fanney ended up chasing him down from behind and was pulling him down...it sort of put Colin up on a pedestal for KJ.

If it wasn't for Fanney, I doubt the hit would have been that hard.

I agree. Kareem was one of my favs. for a while. He had a great freshman year (think UT game) and then chased down Enriques Davis this year saving a TD in the Ole Miss game (the difference in the game). At some point he seemed to either lose his focus, his desire or his confidence. I haven't figured out which. Maybe it's a combination of all 3. We can't afford to have him any less than 100%. Everyone makes mistakes, but he seems to be backpeddling in more ways than one. :frown:

I understand your point Sandra.....but you know as well as I do with the likes of Nico Johnson and Dre Kirkpatrick coming this fall, that Kareem has no choice but to get into gear.

Unlike previous staffs that have been here, you know as well as I do, that CNS will have the best 11 out on the field week in and week out. At any given point that 11 can change.

On a side note, Dre came up into the stands right down from me on Saturday and signed autographs and took pictures for about 30 minutes. Folks flocked all around him and he was eating it up. Pretty nice guy.
