Seems to me this is a good hire to replace Franklin.

How's this for ironic, Vandy lands their first choice and money pants Texas lands somewhere between 3rd and 20th...

I don't regularly keep up with Vandy....but from what little I know, Hes coming into a good program......atleast one that's not in disarray.

What Franklin has been able to do there is remarkable. I certainly don't follow them as closely as some of the other programs in the SEC, but he certainly caught my attention with his recruiting which in turn has translated to wins.

We all know how rumors are....but It was my understanding from someone close to the TX program that Franklin was high on their list, real high....Im curious if he turned down that job....woudnt that be interesting ? lol

If by high on their list he meant somewhere between their 7th and 9th choice, he's telling the truth.

He and Strong were both the final guys linked to the job before it was offered to Strong.

It'll be interesting to see how he does at Penn State. He's certainly coming into the B1G at a good time considering how lack-luster the football up there has been as of late. Heck, saw a commercial the other day from the B1G lauding how they are now the premiere basketball conference.

It certainly struck me as odd.

Agree with the fact that Franklin was awesome for Vandy, right up until he left and started taking recruits that were their's and took them to State College with him. Kind of bush league if you ask me but he left Vandy without some of the best recruits they had. They have dropped rapidly through the recruiting rankings. He is a good coach and he will do well with PSU but I think he lacks some class. Todd Grantham probably agrees with me after that 2012 squabble with Franklin. LOL!

Derek Mason has had a pretty meteoric rise through the coaching profession since 2007. Seems to be a good hire. If he is, I wonder how long before he pursues his next opportunity? Seems to be his MO.

From Wiki:
After his playing career ended, Mason coached college football at San Diego Mesa College, Weber State, Bucknell, Utah, St. Mary's, New Mexico State, and Ohio. From 2007 to 2009, he coached defensive backs for the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL under Brad Childress, who had been one of his coaches at Northern Arizona.
[h=3]Stanford[/h] In 2010, Mason was hired as defensive backs coach on Jim Harbaugh's staff at Stanford. In 2011, Mason was promoted to associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator under head coach David Shaw.[SUP][2][/SUP] He was a finalist for the Broyles Award in 2012, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football. His official position at Stanford was the Willie Shaw Director of Defense.
