⚾ 🥎 Is the runner out?

That's a bad call. It is perceived notion if he's trying to take second. He can juke, jive, dive, whatever he wants as long as he doesn't try and give the notion he's running to second. He is clearly finding the ball and never gave the idea he was running to second. Even getting back into fair territory doesn't make him live. He's safe.

Been a long time but we were always taught to turn out/right to go back to first but turning in/left towards the infield was viewed as a move to go to 2nd. Of course rules change...

Bad call!!!!
He made no move to second base…also he doesn’t need to touch the “fair” bag…. Until he comes back. Guy tagged him before he made his way back to bag. I’d have been ejected and I wouldn’t shut up about it all year at every interview….

You can't come back to the foul bag. You must be on the fair bag or you can be tagged out, regardless of any attempt to take second.
He tagged him before he made his way back to the bag and was called out before he made his way back. Ump needs to be ridiculed the rest of his career.

It was a case of I’m going to call this because there’s a new rule out there and I can be center of attention. Just like the “horse collar” call in football, when it was new they called guys for grabbing any part of the back of the jersey, so they could be the center of attention.

A kid I coached in travel ball several years back, is an umpire. He calls AA and AAA baseball. He does fine fill in work at the D-1 level. He will actually call about a dozen mlb games this year “his 1st time in the bigs”. I’ll see if my son (they still hang out on occasion) can get a hold of him and send him the video to se what he says…. So we will know how it should be called for sure.

So? What’s the verdict?

Different video, same play.

At the :10 mark look at the call. He's arm is going in a counter-clockwise circular motion as if to indicate he turned towards second.

It is a judgement call from the umpire. If I were the umpire I would not have ruled he made an attempt at second. In this case the safety bag wasn't an issue because he was called out before returning to the base, but he would then have to use the white base when returning back. The safety base is for an initial play at first from fair territory.

I don't know the rules, only what you guys have posted. If the rule says he is out, then the rule needs to be changed. I didn't see a move toward second. Only looking around to see where ball had gone. Runner never crossed over foul line into field of play. If a runner can be tagged out because he turned around to his left to go back to the bag instead of turning around to his right? Bogus call in. my view.

He is out. Any baseball players will tell you and I also tell the kids I coach to turn away from the field when they reach the first back.. always turn to toward to First base coach, so that there's no doubt for Umpire to call you out if you get tagged.
