⚾ 🥎 Is the runner out?

Different video, same play.

At the :10 mark look at the call. He's arm is going in a counter-clockwise circular motion as if to indicate he turned towards second.

It...does...not...matter...unless...he...committs. Not sure what folks don't seem to understand. A jerk or momentum doesn't mean he committed. It's an umpire call and nothing there shows he was committing to second. That would be all-time amazing body control if he committed to second and somehow redirected to first that quick.

It's very similar to base path questions where people simply don't seem to understand a baserunner makes his path, and once he deviates from his path it's considered an out. There isn't an imaginary path every runner is suppose to run in-line with. Frustrating for defenses at times, but also keeps runners from seeking out defenders when the ball is on the ground.

It’s a judgement call. Don’t leave calls up to an umpire judgement.

If he (the base runner) would have turned right, further into foul territory to return to 1st……like your taught, it would have been a non-issue.

Only age you teach a turn away from the field is T-ball.
Every other age group is a sprint though and a “break down” looking to fence for past ball. You don’t “turn” your body or feet to the fence only your head looks to fence for ball.

Ok so, it was a bad call. I texted with my former player (now an umpire). Says it looked to him that the ump may have turned his head briefly and assumed the player made a move to second. He said, there shouldn’t have been a call. He said the video quality was poor and he couldn’t be sure looking at the umps field of view as his head rotated.

That’s funny, cause my friend who is a former player turned ump saw the video and said the baserunner made a move towards second……out!

lol. It’s a complete judgement call.

That one is hard to tell from that angle if it is a runner lane violation. If he is touching the line he is considered in the running lane. He clearly interfered with the catch but there should be no violation if the runner was in the running lane since the ball was in fair territory.

CTRL + F > running lane
