flyrod, welcome to the forums. :)

First I gotta say...that your avatar is one of the best ever dude! I love that!!

Glad to have another vet on. I noticed that you had spent some time at both Hanscom and Barksdale. I am a former USAF member myself and although I was only stationed out in Holloman I did spend some time growing up on both of those bases when I was a kid. A couple of years at both Hanscom and Barksdale.

I havent been back to Hanscom since I was a kid but my wife and I have stopped at Barksdale on numerous occasions and I don't think that place has hardly changed at all in 30 years. And the surrounding area still sucks too.

As far as Hanscom, maybe you could confirm something for me. When I was still in at Holloman we had a girl pcs in and she came from Hanscom. She talked like it was the ultimate hell hole up there now. One of the interesting things she mentioned was that Hanscom doesn't have a flight line any more. I was like "what? That's bizarre!" She tried to say that they never had one and I responded that yes they did have one becauase they used to put on air shows all the time there. They had hanger row and everything. I've walked on the flightline myself.

So have they really downsized that much? I have heard by some people that it's nothing more than a reserve base now too, which I don't think it correct.

Thanks porkchop.

What she probably meant was that Hanscom did not have an operational flightline. They have a flightline, but it is for small (mostly propeller) commercial aircraft. There is actually a passenger terminal that you have to go out the back gate towards Concord to get to that is connected to the Hanscom flightline. They still do airshows up there I think, it's just in a very compressed area unlike say at Barksdale where they have ample room to fit everything.

Service

Swore in Dec 2000 to the USAFR.
It took me 3 years to get through all my training requirements and my unit was done with our 2 year activation by then, but I've managed to still find myself in the sandbox a couple of times.
Currently Pilot on spec ops C-130

I'll throw in my Navy history real quick.

I'm an AZ1 and an aircrewman in the Navy Reserves (Active). Part of my time was as a reservists (part-time), and I was IRR for a couple of years. I joined back up after 9-11 and love the combination of serving my country and having a damn good time while doing it. Thanks to all the others that serve, and to those who keep them in their thoughts.
