I mentioned Dillon Johnson's season the other day in a thread. Their rushing game was one of the worst in FBS...but had a 1000 yard guy.

I think this is something important people needs to understand.

Saban's team was Mercedes: World class and luxury... sophisticated. Gets the job done. Built in controlled environments. Must have trust and communication to get the job done. won't tolerate anyone who doesn't believe in the process.

CKD: came over and upgraded the Mercedes brand by bringing in BMW and combining them together. Interesting fit. More horse power, More speed on both side of the ball. More freedom to do a drift burn once in a while. Shares same belief as Saban, but more autonomy with coaches. Bring in Morgan and Change some things in the program. Everyone feels refreshed and ready to work harder.

Same culture, same belief, but just different horsepower and different preferences on cars.

I would like to believe this to be true and the other stuff that is different is immaterial (more relaxed access being one example) . Some of it makes me nervous because on the surface it seems like the culture is changing. Maybe it needs to but the core of what it takes to win better be the same. Time will tell and you will only know after a few years go by.

I have full faith in deboer and his staff to keep Alabama a national title contender every year. Deboer's got this trend where no matter where he's been, all his teams take that next step his second year of being there. That makes me excited for this season, I'm ready to see us make that jump and go back out there and take back what's ours. We've got a hell of a team coming back, and the way deboer has been recruiting..... that will remain the case every season. I'm excited man.

It is true based on many things we've seen and heard. You can keep a Mercedes for 20 years, and it works just fine. It's just older model. You decide to upgrade to newer Mercedes with better horsepower, more features, and etc and it is incredible thing to watch.

I would also bet that Saban’s process would be changing in this current environment. Just like Bryant changed his from the early 60’s to the late 70’s.
The core values didn’t change, but the specifics did. That’s the mark of a long term leader - being able to adapt.
The 2nd season tells the tale. Look at all of the really good/great coaches - marked improvement in the 2nd year.

What about Gene Stallings? he didn't often at TAMU but when he came to Alabama, Team improved in second season.
Mike Dubose- Team improved in second and third season.
Mike Shula-- team improved and went 10-2 (vacated)
CKD - won every where he went.

You said 2nd season tells the tale. No, that's not always the truth. Look at Dubose and Shula. The measure for success is different now than it was few years ago. Make to the playoff is now the success.

Nothing is perfect or flawless, but with that kind of success you're splitting hairs. It really just shows Saban was human and that the margin of error between him and his counterparts was greater than most.

That being said, I agree to let DeBoer do his thing. He's a big boy and will deal with the consequences whether positive or negative.

CKD inherited a pretty good talent base but it does take time. I have said that all along.

This right here will be the key. If the core values are not the same between Bear, CNS and CKD then CKD will not sustain success. The how can change as it did during each of Bear and CNS coaching tenures but the core values did not change. I believe CKD is made of those same things but at least for me I want to see him do it at Bama and not just one season. If he is upholdng those core values you will see it in terms of consistency within the season and across seasons.
