🏈 Interesting S/T Stat

You guys probably have seen this and may have already posted. So I apologize if I'm rehashing... But I read where we are 103rd in kickoff coverage this year. That's bad. And what makes the stat surprising to me is that we started the year (and still sometimes use) 5 5-star recruits in our coverage team (article did not provide the names but I'm sure you can look it up pretty easily). Yes, I understand these guys aren't recruited for special teams skills, but they're dang good athletes. We have no reason to be so bad at coverage. Some of the blame can be on the kicker, but I wouldn't say he makes us 103rd by himself.

Our punter has been good, for the most part. But our punt return guys choose not to field a good number of punts which has also hurt us.

We've had a number of penalties on KO's and punts as well as at least 2 lost fumbles (we've lucked out not having one or two more).

Our offense is "usually" good, but we could always use better field position for us and worse field position for them. I hope this area gets a lot of attention before the A&M, Miss State and Auburn games. We will need every advantage we can have then!

We've win 4 games without stellar special teams play but I think we're going to need it to survive the rest of our schedule.

I haven't really analyzed it but is the hang time on teh kickoffs a bit shy of where it should be. Maybe JK Scott could take a shot at kickoffs. He has a ridiculous leg.

I'm not discounting the break-downs. They've happened.

I do think it's important to note one thing here—one return can skew statistics horribly.

IE: Opening kick against OM was returned for 54 yards. Why did they get that much on the return? It wasn't a breakdown in coverage as much as it was a bad kick. And, that's not on Griffith as much as it is on Jones. 10-15MPH winds at kickoff, Jones was supposed to hold the ball until it was kicked and let go when Adam was a yard or two from kicking.

Take that one kick out and the ranking jumps @ 40 spots.

Very true. The one hurt us. I bet lots of teams could point to the same thing. Hell, look at USCe giving up 2 for TDs against Vandy. At least we haven't done that! That's got them way down below us. But I still say our special teams have a ways to go to be considered strong. considering the penalties, fumbles, missed FG's, olè punt catches. ESPNs tries to quantify special teams impact on a teams score and we are taking away 3.5 points from our scoring with total special teams play. Has us 119 out of 128 teams. We have the offense to overcome it, but we may not always, as in this past weekend. I bet the S/T staff is on it. I hope so at least!

I agree kickoff coverage and starting position mean a lot right now. We really need to be able to flip the field on opposing offenses but that also falls on the offense to produce first downs and push the sticks forward for the punter to put it closer to their end zone. One of the most alarming statistics and possibly the #1 reason we've got a L is turnover margin. I believe this is the worst TO margin in the Nick Saban era. We're used to seeing a + sign on the other side of the number but not at the moment. 106th Nationally at -4, just deplorable.
