You guys probably have seen this and may have already posted. So I apologize if I'm rehashing... But I read where we are 103rd in kickoff coverage this year. That's bad. And what makes the stat surprising to me is that we started the year (and still sometimes use) 5 5-star recruits in our coverage team (article did not provide the names but I'm sure you can look it up pretty easily). Yes, I understand these guys aren't recruited for special teams skills, but they're dang good athletes. We have no reason to be so bad at coverage. Some of the blame can be on the kicker, but I wouldn't say he makes us 103rd by himself.
Our punter has been good, for the most part. But our punt return guys choose not to field a good number of punts which has also hurt us.
We've had a number of penalties on KO's and punts as well as at least 2 lost fumbles (we've lucked out not having one or two more).
Our offense is "usually" good, but we could always use better field position for us and worse field position for them. I hope this area gets a lot of attention before the A&M, Miss State and Auburn games. We will need every advantage we can have then!
We've win 4 games without stellar special teams play but I think we're going to need it to survive the rest of our schedule.
