🏈 "I don't like the Wild Cat formation."

I don't like the Wildcat formation either, in as much as last night, every time we used it, it was a running play, whether it was Upchurch, Ingram or an end around to Julio. It was all running out of that formation. It was like holding up a big sign to VT, saying "IT'S A RUN".

If we could somehow get some passes mixed into it, then maybe it'll work...but for now, it's useless.

^^ EXACTLY!! Someone understands, huzzah!!

"Is it more of a case where fans don't like the Wild Cat because it was completely different that what the 2008 Tide squad ran?"

Noooo, it's because the way Alabama set-up the Wildcat it was doomed from the beginning against that D. If we do the exact same thing next week, I'm sure it will look a lot better. A LOT.

However, if you do what you're supposed to do in the Wildcat & put your QB who isn't a threat to catch the ball or run a reverse on the sideline while running it, chances for success GREATLY increase!

When the D has to worry about 11 players on offense it becomes significantly more difficult to stop the offense than only worrying about 10. That's just fundamental football.

I'm all for the High Tide offense.....with 11 players on the field!"

Continue to run the High Tide! Just make sure GMac is where he belongs while running it, on the side-line. ORRRRRR, if he is split out wide, send him in motion, pitch the ball to him & have him throw it.

Pretty muchsums it up, we need to see how it works over the next 4 games before we scratch it. It has alot of potential as the O gets more accumstomed to it. Also, it helps keep the heat off McElroy.

I dont want him to be hit as much as he was last night anymore this season.

i think it's a slow set up.. bama's offense is too easy to prepare for.. we will see more of the wildcat and probably more of the pistol too.. it takes away from the time that opposing coaches can prepare for our regular offense.. as far as last night i think the tempo was to slow.. the wild cat is about running up to the line and not allowing the D to adjust.. we will see more plays from the formation and maybe even more formations..

A counter point.
If you recall the no-huddle offenses that some teams have used recently, the speed of game is used to prevent the defense from changing out personnel packages, and in limiting the D to one grouping the hope is that you can gain an advantage by being more flexible than they are.

That said, having GMac run off the field would no only tip what was to come, but also give our opponent the chance to answer the personnel change -- no advantage gained.

With GMac within breathing distance of the sideline, and a defender obliged to babysit him, both teams lose one player to make it a 10vs10 play. So the advantage is to us.

So as a Defensive coordinator, do you put your strongest Pass protection group on the field, or do you use your Run stopping specialist, bucause you are forced to commit without knowing what Bama will break the huddle with.

I can only hope the defense leaves Gmac alone and keys in on 10 of our players. If by some chance GMac is alone and Ingram can get the ball to a wide open Gmac, then what? Plain and simple, it was the first time we used it, and I actually don't mind seeing it.

I loved the wildcat. If Smelley had thrown a block on the first run from scrimmage, Ingram would have ran untouched to the endzone. Get used to seeing that formation, because I have a feeling we are gonna use it alot. The coaches will see on film that if there was a key block made here and there, the plays ran from the Wildcat would have been much more productive. We ran the wildcat against the best defense in the country all fall, so I'm sure if it worked against our defense, it will work against everyone else's. Simply put, we just didn't block correctly. And you know that they will eventually throw in the wrinkle of a pass when they feel they need to. Our coaches are not stupid.:panic:

i don't think anyone has brought this perspective yet...but we are forcing opponents to have to plan for our Wildcat - now this means something as they have to spend some amount of time getting a plan worked up for this, and we are going to keep using it as CNS said today - although I haven't listened/watched the speech yet.

Besides Ole Miss and LSU, how many teams are we going to face that run this formation?

Just curious...don't feel like counting right now. :bolt:

not sure, i suspect Ucheatum will be trying it this year and I think i've seen UK do this as well. Not sure if Aubies OC will do this, not sure if he ran this before - I don't think he did, but not 100% as I haven't really followed him.

Yeah, the Aubies run it with Kodi Burns if I'm correct. Malzahn was at Arkansas under Nutt when they adopted it, and he may have been the one to introduce them to it. I could be wrong, but I think that's right.

I wasn't aware LSU ran it but Auburn is running it with Kodi Burns and Ole Miss like u said with McCluster. I have no clue about Florida International or North Texas. I don't think Arkansas runs it anymore but Nutt may bring it back. I obviously didn't get a chance to see them play against Missouri St. though. I don't think Kentucky runs it and South Carolina doesn't. Haven't seen Tennessee or State use it either.

Agree....we need to do more with it than just "darby up the middle" BJ or Earl Alexander would be able to run it or throw a 5-10 yd pass when the def cheats up.

Or even Star. I'd also like to see Ingram toss one or two. Throw the same ole runs at the 'D' the first few times and then let Ingram chunk one up to Julio.
