🏈 Hurts, Bateman, Barnett and the QB competition

He looked good crashing into the endzone for the TD. We spent half the night sputtering on offense and still used the spread to score a ton. Frankly, offensive line, running back and QB's can't do anything but get better.

I agree on all of this. I guess my point was that on his other runs, outside of maybe one, he looked like he was running in sand. Maybe my expectations are too high..wouldn't be the first time.

Yeah, I heard that after I made the post above and thought the same thing. I think he would like the whole "QB battle" idea going to try to keep Ole Miss guessing.

No thank you.

Letting the QB battle continue into Ole Miss last year cost us that game. Coker played decently against Whisky in game 1. He should've been named the starter then.

He would've gotten all the 1st team reps from then on, and his maturation and confidence that we saw in the 2nd half of the season would've developed much sooner.

As decent as Barnett looked in what essentially was garbage time, it's clear Hurts is our #1.

Give him all those reps now so he can be hitting on all cylinders by the time we go to Oxford.

I guess you didnt get the "QB Battle" being in quotation marks. I dont think Saban feels there is still a competition but there is no chance he lets Ole Miss know that. Think back to 2011. AJ played almost the entire Penn State game, most of us felt that it isn't a competition anymore. Saban said it isnt over and he just felt like AJ had a rhythm going so they wanted to leave him in. AJ and Sims played equal snaps the next game, Kent State if Im not mistaken, and Saban said that the competition was still very much real. AJ played the entire Florida game and never looked back. There's no chance Saban didnt already name AJ the guy after the Penn State game but why let Florida know that?

As Birdman said, I don't think it's actually that the QB competition is continuing, it's about making Ole Miss think it is so that they have to prep for both guys.

Prep for both guys? So they have to prep for a dangerous dual threat guy who can make any throw, and runs really well. Annd they have to prep for a guy who has skaky confidence with the potential to throw far?
I don't think the "shell game" works unless the other team is unaware of a possible dual threat guy

Sorry, this ongoing QB competition is just not cool, and doesn't help us at all.
It would've been cool if Hurts was the unquestioned starter for game 1, and he just tried to hide his hand, but he wasn't.

Barnett seemed all jacked up at the start. The sack seemed to rattle him even more. I did like how he came back in and Kiffin and Saban left the playbook open and allowed him to build confidence.
Hurts seemed more even keeled even with the fumble. I must admit, I worried how he would respond. I'm impressed with him and he has an extremely high ceiling!!
Getting these two young bucks playing at a high level and in meaningful reps spells bad news for everyone on our schedule for the next 3-4 years!!!
When he with down,I thought for sure he hurt his hand.

Try selling that to USC fans, they're still trying to figure out how they got that 52 point beatdown. That would be the 3rd worst beatdown in the history of the proud trojan football history. They don't think that's cool either.

Those saying there isn't a QB competition still, are totally wrong.
Jalen would be getting mostly all of the reps.
Instead I think we see Hurts and Barnett split almost equal time in the next game, instead of getting Jalen tons of reps to get him ready for Ole Miss.
No, our QB situation is still being botched. At least Bateman isn't in the mix.

Dang, I guess Saban should have added you to the staff instead of Sarkisian. I'll give Nick a call.

Bama is apparently not on your tight schedule to succeed. Let's see we used two freshmen QBs and two freshmen running backs, started 3 new O-linemen. We scored our first TD with 7:46 in the 2nd quarter and we scored our 52nd point with 9:52 to go in the 4th quarter.

So we scored 52 points in about 2 full quarters of football. We run the spread concepts with QB being featured prominently in the running game throughout the contest. And you struggle with wasting time and having another QB ready to go. That about get it?

I didn't understand most of your post. It's not worded very well.
We don't have the luxury at this point of establishing a backup when we haven't even established a starter. Once Jalen Hurts, or whoever ends up winning the job, gets all the reps in practice, and gets 4-5 games under their belt, then maybe late in games, if the outcome is no longer in question, we can think about the backup getting reps.
Right now, neither QB has much game experience, and Jalen doesn't have much college experience at all.
Saban didn't play Barnett so that the backup could get reps. He played him because the QB position is still very much up for grabs.

Let me see if I can simplify the words just for you. You seem mighty worried and very emotional about what has not happened and not much concerned how we just beat the living hell out of a very talented team. Did you watch any of the ND vs Texas game? Two QBs are playing for each team and they are easily thriving as they grow and figure things out. Take a look at your own Alabama QB history in the bone. When you have offenses that feature the running game and a strong-willed coach who will accept nothing less than their best you can play two QBs for as long as you like and excel.

52 points in 2 quarters of football, maybe we have more luxury at the position than you are giving Alabama credit for?
