🏈 Hurts, Bateman, Barnett and the QB competition

So team Hurts was right all along. **** all yall haha

Regarding the "Indecision at QB" in the earlier thread i created, it's STILL an issue.
We will not be able to have an identity on offense, or as a team until the QB position is settled.
Saban wanted Barnett. Kiffin wanted Hurts. But it's always telling that when the game was looking shaky, they went straight to Hurts. Exactly what they did with Coker in the Ole Miss game. That tells you they know deep down that Hurts is the best they've got.

Barnett looked good, actually, but not when there was pressure in the game.
What pisses me off at this point is that Hurts still isn't officially the guy, he's still not going to get all of the reps.
He's a true ******* freshman. He needs every rep he can possibly get. He needs Lane Kiffin by his side at all times helping him with the offense, and tailoring it to fit his skillset. We need to decide that Hurts is the guy. Until then we're wasting reps, and not allowing the offense to gel

It's hard to say after part of one quarter that Barnett won't be able to play under "pressure", or that the Ole Miss game decisions mirrored those of the USC game.

With at least two good QBs we have an opportunity to be more ready if one goes down. I'm confident they'll both get the reps they need to be developed.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think BB8 helmet fits him 'funny'?

Saban didn't put Hurts in because the game looked "shaky". He clearly said it was the plan all along to put him in for the 3rd series of the game.

People need to trust in Saban. He's got this.

While I do agree that you cant necessarily gauge how well someone will play for a whole year based off two or three drives... it said alot to me just how timid he looked in the early stages of the game. Hurts never looked that way, even after he fumbled his very first play, BUT when Barnett did come in later he lit the USC defense up. Now, I really wasn't paying attention to how many backups they had brought in at that point so I cant really judge yet on that, but there was no pressure at that point. Maybe that success has loosened Barnett up and he wont feel timid anymore, but I def. would rather have Hurts out there against Ole Miss under those bright lights.

The way he played, and the poise he showed, earned for him IMO. No hyperbole, just what he showed on the field and the way the team seemed to rally around him. I think it spoke volumes to his character how he was cheering Blake on late in the game too.

And aside from all of that, the extra dimension he adds to the offense is invaluable; especially if our oline is struggling

The young backs didn't do BB any favors early on either. They missed blocking assignments that only added to the pressure. I think there was just as much of a RB competition last night as there was a QB battle.

I'm rewatching the game now. The OL and RBs have a ways to go in pass protection. For that reason alone, I like hurts' over BB.

Once the OL begin to gel and get in a groove and the RB situation settles to allow them to get into a better rhythm, this team will be VERY good no matter which QB is the starter.

Once the offense settled down it was on, but they did look a amped in the beginning. I'd put money on it that Hurts got a team a little less lit than what Barnett started with.
I dont think so (see Jalen Hurts' first play). The difference was Hurts was significantly less lit than Barnett. Of course, it helps when you can use your athleticism to easily avoid the pass rush. You might be more nervous if you feel like you have to make a play by standing in the pocket, and it collapses on a key down.

Don't disagree, just saying that you have to take into account the team settled down a bit after two short possessions.
Three short possessions, but yeah. Again though, if Barnett had been out there on the 4th possession, and he took a sack or something, he might still be rattled. I think Hurts's ability to avoid the rush makes him more calm/confident. He knows he can at least pick up some yards on his own if the pass pro breaks down.

When hurts completed that 1st 3rd down conversion right at the sticks, I knew THEN he was our QB. Rolling left, and delivers a fucking perfectly placed lazer to Ridley from across his body.

It was such a missile that the DB on Ridley's ass didn't even have time to react.

We ended up having to punt that drive, but you could just see the writing on the wall.

This. Glass Hulk was a non-factor and every RB on the roster except Erokishima(?) played.

I tend to agree, but to say USC was as hyped then as they were first series or two would not be thorough. Can't say the beginning of the game in a new season foesn't create a more amped team. Plus our defense wore their drfense down by three and outs non-stop.

Saban said the same thing after Blake pretty much won the job in '14 and even AJ in '11. He laid out for you, if you listened after that, what is he doing. "You guys talk about so much wanting to know who the QB is, but none of you wrote about the USC players saying publicly "we wish we knew who the QB was going to be", isnt that the point? To make it hard for them?"

He trolled all of us with the whole "It's going to be Cooper and Barnett" **** last week. Glad that Hurts seemed to live up to the hype, he really seems like the real deal, he had some timing issues that more reps is going to fix and that offensive line has a lot of things to sure up as well.
Yeah, I heard that after I made the post above and thought the same thing. I think he would like the whole "QB battle" idea going to try to keep Ole Miss guessing.

Barnett seemed all jacked up at the start. The sack seemed to rattle him even more. I did like how he came back in and Kiffin and Saban left the playbook open and allowed him to build confidence.
Hurts seemed more even keeled even with the fumble. I must admit, I worried how he would respond. I'm impressed with him and he has an extremely high ceiling!!
Getting these two young bucks playing at a high level and in meaningful reps spells bad news for everyone on our schedule for the next 3-4 years!!!
