🏈 Hazlewood consolidates with Courtland- Home of Langham, Lynch, the Goode's...

I know that this has been talked about before, and considering the economics of the times it was inevitable. Nonetheless it is a sad day for both schools.

Like many small towns in rural areas Town Creek (and Courtland) have seen the best and brightest among their young people move away to bigger cities. The downturn in the auto industry, affecting plants in nearby Decatur, has cost a fair number of jobs in that area. Town Creek probably has fewer citizens now than it did when my uncle was principal of Hazlewood in the 50s and 60s.

I can certainly understand why someone would think that the consolidation is a sad thing, but there is a lot of upside to consolidation as well. When I was in middle school and junior high after we finally moved back home (to Alabama) I was living in Tuscaloosa. Most of my family is from Lamar County and many of them went to school at Kennedy. Some of you old timers might remember Kennedy high School. Well, the school burnt down in about 84, so they started working on a new school between Kennedy and Millport which is the current South Lamar High School.

For my cousins that grew up going to Kennedy it was a sad day consolidating into South Lamar. The small schools like that really have a unique atmosphere and closeness about them. So leaving that setting was painful for a lot of kids. Not to mention, Kennedy and Millport were bitter rivals. So you can understand the mixed emotions.

Well, the upside to all of that is that when I moved back home in 87 and started going to school there I was fortunate to go to a school with brand spanking new facilities on every level. Academic as well as sports. South Lamar became one of the dominate 3A sports programs in the state during the late 80's and early-mid 90's. It really was a great school and a great time to go there.

Economics is a bit** though. When I attended South Lamar we were the smallest 3A in the state averaging only about 1000 people K-12. At the time, the unemployment rate in Lamar County was the state's highest at 11%. I would wager now that it's upwards of 30%. South Lamar has gone from being a dominant 3A to a dominant 1A program and the enrollment is closer to 500 students now. There are no jobs, therefore there are no people. Everyone who can has basically packed up and left or elected to send their kids to Lamar County or Fayette County. It's pretty sad to see what has happened to my old high school and community.

At least in the short term, this is a good move for Courtland and Hazelwood. In the 80's especially, they were high school football in the state of Alabama. They've produced an incredible number of college athletes considering the size of the schools. When combined, there may not be a school 1-5A in north Alabama that could beat them if they produce players anything close to what they did when I was in school. In the long term, they'll probably suffer the same fate as schools like South Lamar. The economy is bad everywhere, but it's been especially bad in rural Alabama for years, and probably wont get better any time soon.

Great comments, Chop. You have certainly expressed the realities of the situation. Lawrence County is among the poorest counties in the state, and from an economic and scholastic point of view consolidation just makes sense. These two schools have not been as dominant as they were in the eighties or early nineties in sports, but they are still up near the top in their classes. I hope that the merged school does well and that the change is a positive one for both communities.

Dude, I remember when I was in HS and Courtland was finishing seasons 6-2. They were 6-2 because no one would play them and they'd play several 5A or 6A teams a year just to get some games in. They'd beat some of those teams too.

Joe might can help me out with this, but I think Courtland's traditional (historic) area was something like Courtland, Hazelwood, Hatton. Then depending on who was 1A or 2A it might include Colbert County,.

So Courtland would play their area, then have to schedule the big boys just to play football games. No one else wanted a piece of them.

That is spot on, Chop. No one in their own class wanted to play either of these teams if they didn't have too. I remember that Hazlewood, which was always 1A by school size, voluntarily stepped up to 2A to try to get more competition. If you look back at some of the teams, what stood out was the speed they had year in and year out. Hazlewood won a whole bunch of state championships in track as well as football. It may have nothing to do with it, but Olympic legend Jesse Owens grew up in Lawrence County, near Courtland.

I'm going to start looking soon, to seewhat class the consolidated school will compete in. I don't think it will take long for them to be an important factor.

I NEVER knew Hazlewood won 11 state football championship(state record)
I know in HS we was a 4a school and we played then in a spring game and got beat by like 14 i think. starters only played 1 half.

Hazelwood has won their fare share of titles Callahan. That school was BAD A$$ back in the day.

The record for state titles in Alabama though, is still Colbert County, if I'm not mistaken. Where did it say state record Callahan? Did you find that on AHSAA.com?

He's right Pork Hazlewood has 11 SC Colbert County has 6 and has been runner up 6 times. To me the big differences is Colbert County has one SC in 5A and the others in 3A also runner-up in 4A. I think the only other team in AL that has played in the title game in 3 different classes is TR Miller but not sure of that. But to me its still amazing that these 3 schools only 20 miles apart on Highway 20 can have this much talent. throw in Deslher just up the road to. It was a hell of a run that all 4 of them schools had.

In a related issue, Hazlewood has more state track championships for boys than anyone, with 15. St Paul's is second with 14. The Golden Bears won six in arow from 1989-1994 (this was after all the Goodes had finished.) Pierre Goode still holds the state HS records for 100m (10.39) and 110m high hurdles (13.73). Pierre also holds the 2A mark for 300m intermdiate hurdles (37.72), and the long jump (22'11"). Antonio Langham has the 2A record for the triple jump (45'7.75").

Colbert cOUNTy has won 6.
Hazelwood also hold record for most points/margin of victory in championship game
2A--Hazlewood 75-0 Georgiana

As i said earlier in this post add in Deshler they are 7 to 8 mins from Colbert County. They play every year and is a good hard hitting football game if you every get a chance to see one it is worth your time.
