Funny how things work out. The controversy over this year's game can only bring back memories of the 2004 Bama at LSU game. Unlike this year, there is little question that the terrible no call on LSU pass interference in the end zone affected the outcome of that game. But just how bad, or good, was that loss?

Consider that at the end of that season, the LSU HC took the Miami Dolphins' HC job. If the plate over Nick Saban's door had read "8-4 with a loss to Bama" instead of "9-3 with a win over Bama", would Miami had been knocking at that door? I don't think so. If Nick Saban had not gone to Miami he would probably still be at LSU. Regardless, it is safe to assume that he would NOT be at Bama.

An even more disturbing thought is that a win would have put Bama at 10-0 for the year, and probably put us in the SEC CG. This would have bought Shula more time, and we might still have him.

That's a bit of a stretch. He was coming off the National Championship season. His credentials were well established. LSU before Nick Saban was no better than Ole Miss.

Bama was terrible in 2004 (Spencer Pennington was our qb for the majority of year)

Good gravy, what a horrible year! 5 OT loss to Tennessee (the 3rd and 19 game), Kines was rushing 2 and dropping 9 inside of the 20, the atrocious loss to Arkansas, the beatdown in Athens when poor Croyle (injured) was fed to the wolves. That was a terrible, terrible year!

Quick recap for anyone confusing 04 with 05.

2004 was the high water mark for the disaster that the sanctions brought to us. After the penalties were handed down in February 2002, we had already lost 1 recruiting class and perhaps one could say the 2001 class as well due to uncertainty. BTW, they handed down the penalties the DAY BEFORE NSD. Nice, huh?

2002 was actually not a bad year, with us winning at Tennessee and at LSU. Remember that beat down? I do. I bet Nick Saban remembers seeing Shaud Williams taillights running down the field on the first play from scrimmage too. 2003, if you don't recall, was the year of the revolving coach, after Fran ran, we had Price for 15 minutes, then that whole debacle with nekkid women and all....All the fun we had in 2003 losing to N. Illinois, Kentucky, etc, etc...and of course losing again to Oklahoma in Tuscaloosa, then Tenn, LSU, Auburn. We were basically give up for dead. Don't forget losing to Hawaii to finish it all off.

2004 was more of the same, IMHO, even though we did win 6 games to get bowl eligible. Lost all the big games, UGA, Tenn, LSU, AUB, as well as S. Carolina and Ole Miss. Fun times.

2005 was the year that SI declared we were "back", but one #4 shattered his leg in our finest moment, and we wheezed to 9-0 before losing to LSU and Auburn, badly. If I recall, there was a dirty call in that game as well that enabled LSU to win, at our place, in OT (I think).

2006 didn't happen. I've blocked it from memory. 2007, ditto.

Yep. Me too! I really was hoping for the best for Shula when that season started but the writing was certainly on the walls that change was needed (and not that change you believe in crap either!) That was the game Mal left the press box early in embarrassment and everyone knew that game was the end. Look where we are today. I stand by everything I said back in those days and feel vindicated because I was painted as the Devil for bashing Shula.

It took me a while but I finally began to understand you after disagreeing with you about Shula for too long. You certainly called it way before most were willing to. Me included.

All of those where in 2003, not 2004.

I remember 2004 started fantastically w/ Croyle having the highest QB rating in the country b/4 his injury. 'Bama stomped Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa that year.

But once that injury bug reared it's head, it went down hill from there.

I have to agree w/ Lenny on the 2006 MSU loss. That was the final thread.

I'll be the first to say that I was really pissed w/ CMS firing for a few reasons:

• Loyalty; he held the rope when nobody else wanted it.
• He always had the NCAA recruiting limitations during his tenure.
• We didn't have a some superstar head coach waiting to take over.

I just thought it sent the wrong message to any head coach worth his salt.

However, I am thrilled beyond belief that we have CNS. When he got hired, I simply couldn't believe it but once it sank in that we had CNS then I tipped my hat to firing of CMS b/c we actually got somebody worth a crap over the last 10 years. This is one of those times that I am thrilled to be wrong!

I really liked Shula! I hope he ends up as a coordinator or coach again somewhere. Not the greatest head coach though.

The "greatest" Bama loss is the one that made me a Tide fan, and that happened 9 months ago in New Orleans.

Coincidentally, my first Utah game was a last-second loss to BYU in '98.
