Good read Terry. I've always found the Tampa 2 defense a bit odd, with the MLB dropping so deep in coverage. A middle linebacker playing the deep third isn't something you see often. Probably because (as you mentioned) how many MLB's can actually get back into that kind of coverage? And we're just talking obvious passing downs here, not a 2nd and 5 situation that would allow an offense to mix it up a bit. That alone would force the MLB to cover the defensive interior against the run, plus the deep, middle, or short passing routes in the center (depending on the coverage call).
