Seems like he has passed Christian Miller on the mythical depth chart.
Redshirt freshman going to be big factor at outside linebacker for Alabama
Go back and watch the tape.
Look at the two outside linebackers when Alabama was in its base defense against USC.
One was Ryan Anderson. That was expected. The other? It wasn't Tim Williams, the star widely projected to be an early first-round pick in next year's NFL draft. It was Anfernee Jennings, a promising redshirt freshman from Dadeville who looks poised to play a significant role for the Tide defense this season.
"We really feel like Anfernee can be a good player for us," Alabama coach Nick Saban said, "and that's one of the guys we want to play in there some (with) Tim and Ryan to help them out."
Jennings spent most of last season working back to full strength after undergoing surgery to repair a slipped disc in his back.
Since then, Jennings has quietly risen up Alabama's depth chart.
The 6-foot-3 former four-star recruit arrived in Tuscaloosa last summer weighing around 255 pounds. He was up to around 270 by the start of spring practice in March.
Jennings capped the spring with six tackles and three sacks during the Tide's spring game.
Afterward, Saban said Jennings "probably improved as much as anybody" during the spring.
USC was his first game action at Alabama. He had three tackles and one stop for a loss while helping the Tide limit the Trojans to 194 yards of total offense and an average of just 2.1 yards per carry during Alabama's 52-6 win.
His first tackle was during the first quarter, combining with Anderson to stop USC running back Justin Davis after just a 2-yard gain on a run up the middle.
He got the tackle for a loss early in the fourth quarter.
Jennings was matched up against Trojans left tackle Chad Wheeler, who CBS Sports projects will be a second-round pick in next year's NFL draft.
Jennings worked around Wheeler and tackled running back Ronald Jones for a 2-yard loss.
"He did a good job last week," Saban said of Jennings, the No. 11 weak-side defensive end and No. 172 overall prospect in last year's recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. "He's a physical player, has good size, can play at the point, and he has some pass rush ability. All those things are things we can certainly use in regular downs and in nickel."
