🏈 Given the Choice- McElroy or Mallett?

Nice read Terry.:a:

I heard teammates talk about how GMc knows football, how important he is to the team. I have not seen Mallet play enough games and cannot give a an evaluation. Going to have to go with what I know. I will take GMc for the intangibles alone.

Let's not forget that Bama had a chance to pursue Bama and Bama had a chance to pursue Mallet - Twice - and neither did.

Bama fought to steal McElroy form Texas Tech, and McElroy forsaked Texas Tech for Bama.

We have who we want, and who wants us. Why would we change?

Lets not for a second think that we have had to settle with Greg because he is not a first year starter. Ryan Mallet did not have to play behind QBs that are now with the Chiefs and the Falcons respectively. There are very few schools where Greg would have had to sit for three years, and Arkansas is not one of them.

This one man's opinion is that if Greg McElroy would have gone to Arkansas vice Bama or Texas Tech, Houston might not have left (because winning cures all), and thus Mallet would never have become a Razorback.

Lost me a little here LBS.

We are better off having who we want, and who wants us. We are better off with GM for this reason.

On top of this, GM is a really good QB, a point that is hidden by the fact that he has had to wait out TWO, older, future NFL QBs. Had he gone to Arkansas as a Freshman, vice BAMA with its Croyle and Wilson, GM would have been starting even earlier.

I contend that had he started as a Freshman or Sophmore at Arkansas, Mallet would not have chosen that Razorbacks to transfer to. This because Houston may have had more success with a freshman GM who had just finished a 15 game winning streak at South Carroll HS.

Yes Houston had off the field issues, but winning cures all and GM would have brought more optimism to Fayetteville than Casey Dick...in my opinion.

I'm gonna reserve judgement for awhile since neither one has really been through an entire season. Stats look good but the one I want most is the W. I think Mallet is the sexy pick since he's 6'7" and weighs 240 and can throw the piss out of the ball. Greg though, is no slouch at 6'3" 220 with uncanny accuracy.

 Found this quote in a discussion of this article on another forum. An Alabama fan had said to wait and reserve judgement late Saturday afternoon. This was the response:

"Alabama beating Arkansas won't make McElroy a better QB than Mallett. It just means that McElroy has the benefit of playing with an actual defense."

Mallet's Qb rating: 47.4
Mallet's passing eff: 76.6

Gmac's QB rating: 151.0
Gmac's passing efff: 213.6
17 of 24, 291 yards, 3 TD's.

From "Trickle Down Economics and Pigskin Prognostication Week 4"

With all the attention given to Mallett, don’t be surprised if (much to the hog fans’ chagrin) McElroy is the quarterback who emerges from this game as a star in the league.

and

Arkansas offense is good, no doubt…but not as good as many think. Alabama’s defense will expose them this week.

Excellent work as usual.

What jumped out at me statistically is not the yards or completion ratio, but the number of people who caught passes.

Greg threw 17 fewer passes than Arkie QB's, but hit 2 more receivers than Arkansas did. I don't know if that speaks more to our receiving corp depth, or to GMac's ability to look off and check down.

Regardless, McElroy looked like an AA QB, and Mallett looked like a big oaf with a strong arm.

I've been a McElroy fan since the day we signed him. That said, it's natural that the Hog fans would prefer Mallet. Personally, I'd rather have a good QB on a winning team than a great QB on a loser. Not saying here that Greg is just good and Mallet is great. I think they're both immensely talented players, and I'd still take Greg . . . in a heartbeat.
